I am Yamanaka from Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd., a specialist in roofing, exterior wall painting, and exterior renovations located in Aoba-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture!
This is a case study of an exterior renovation project in Asao-ku, Kawasaki City.
The work this time includes roof overlay (cover method) using Ridgeway and the removal of a skylight!

This apartment had four skylights, but due to a leak from one of them, we received a request to remove it, and we proceeded with the removal!

On this page, I will explain the actual results of the work done by Kakeru Koumuten!

Roof Overlay (Cover Method) Construction Steps

1. Removal of Existing Ridge Cap and Skylight

We will dismantle the existing ridge and snow stops that are unnecessary for the cover method! Since we are removing one skylight this time, we will also take out the skylight!

2. Repair of Skylight Underlayment

We will cover the area where the skylight was removed with plywood. We will adjust it to match the height of the existing roofing material. Since it may look unsightly from inside if it remains as plywood, we sometimes apply wallpaper.

3. Installation of Roofing (Waterproof Sheet)

Next, we will install the roofing sheet (waterproof sheet)! The roofing used is Tajima Roofing/Tadis Self!
This material is a delayed adhesive modified asphalt roofing, which is said to have double the durability of regular asphalt roofing.
Due to its adhesive properties, it sticks to the substrate, providing higher waterproofing compared to standard roofing.
As a primary waterproofing measure, if the roofing is properly installed, there will be no leaks!
We will ensure it is securely adhered to prevent it from blowing away.

4.Accessory Processing (Karakusa and Keraba)

Before the main roof construction, we will process and install accessories such as keraba and karakusa sheet metal!
The materials used for the accessories will be galvalume steel sheets.

5.Main Construction (Asahi Fiberglass/Ridgeway)

After processing the accessories, we will install the Ridgeway main roofing up to the ridge! We will apply single cement at the overlapping areas during the installation.
Once we have installed up to the ridge, we will place the necessary materials called “kanban” to secure the ridge metal.

6. Skylight Surrounding Sheet Metal Processing

Simultaneously with the main construction of the Ridgeway, we will process the sheet metal around the skylight. We will be working with flat sheet metal made of galvalume.

7. Ridge Metal and Sealing at Various Locations

Next, we will process and install the ridge cap. We will thoroughly apply sealing on the inside of the joints. We will also perform waterproof sealing around the skylight.
We will use stainless steel nails and screws that are resistant to rust!

8. Cleaning

We will clean up the debris that has fallen onto the balcony and rain gutters. We will thoroughly remove any nails or metal fragments to prevent injuries. The balcony will be restored to its original state, marking the completion of the work!

About Roofing Material (Ridgeway)

The roofing material used is Ridgeway from Asahi Fiberglass.
Ridgeway comes with a 10-year manufacturer warranty.
Since it uses natural stone that is baked onto the surface, it is a roofing material that does not require painting, thus reducing maintenance costs!
The use of fine natural stones on the surface means you won’t be troubled by rain noise.
Additionally, it is a lightweight roofing material, making it strong against earthquakes and providing seismic resistance.

*After installation, the surface decorative stones may fall off for about a week, but this does not indicate any quality issues.

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?

The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost as it is and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is laid over, it is also referred to as “overlapping roofing.”

Advantages of the Overlay Method

Since a “new roof” is placed over the “current roof,” almost no demolition work is required, meaning very little waste is generated.
This is its biggest feature, leading to various advantages.

The only part that requires demolition and waste disposal is the ridge cap, making it more cost-effective compared to complete roof replacement.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for details, please refer to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Some building materials used in structures built before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to demolish due to their high environmental impact, and the costs for demolition and waste disposal are also high. The overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.

Some may wonder, “Is it safe to live in a building that uses asbestos-containing materials?” but rest assured. As long as there is no destruction or crushing, it will not disperse into the air.

Additionally, it can be completed in a shorter time frame compared to painting or complete replacement. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn makes the expenses more affordable.
