Hello!
I am Yamanaka from Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd., a specialist in roofing, exterior wall painting, and exterior renovations located in Aoba-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture!
This is a case study of roof renovations, exterior wall painting, and joint replacement work in Nakahara-ku, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
The work involved a roof overlay (cover method) using Ridgeway!
Thank you very much for choosing Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd. from among many contractors.
We received a request from Company A, who we always appreciate!
Nakahara-ku Roof Overlay Work Procedure
1. Existing Ridge and Snow Stops Demolition
We will dismantle only the ridge metal, ventilation ridge, and snow stops that may obstruct the overlay work.

2. Roofing Installation (Waterproof Sheet)
The roofing material used this time is modified asphalt. It is expected to have double the durability of asphalt roofing!

3. Component Processing (Karakusa and Keraba)
We will process and install the keraba and karakusa.
4. Main Construction
Once the main body is finished, we will install the ridge board.
This time, we used a cedar ridge board,

6. Ridge Flashing Processing
We will process and install the ridge flashing and ventilation ridge. We will firmly apply sealing on the inside of the joints.

7. Cleaning
We will remove any debris that has fallen around the house and inside the rain gutters and perform a wipe-down.
We strive to make the area cleaner after the work than it was before!

Joint Replacement Construction Procedure
1. Removal of Existing Sealing Material
We will remove the existing sealing material using a cutter or similar tool.

2. Masking Tape Application
We will check the position for applying the tape and carefully apply it to avoid embedding it into the surface.
3. Application of Primer
Apply the primer with a brush or similar tool, ensuring there are no missed spots.

4. Filling of Sealant Material
Place the nozzle of the caulking gun against the joint base and fill it adequately.

5. Finishing with a Trowel
Firmly press with a trowel that matches the joint width to achieve a smooth finish.

6. Removal of Masking Tape
Quickly remove the masking tape after finishing.
Exterior Painting Work Procedure
1. High-Pressure Washing
Thoroughly remove moss and dirt from the exterior walls using high-pressure washing.

2. Preparation of Areas
Protect areas that should not be painted, such as windows, sashes, and floors, using masking tape, blue sheets, and polymer masks.
This is an important task.
3. Primer Coat
This time, we used SK Kaken’s water-based Soft Surf SG.
Applying a solid primer coat makes a difference in durability and finish.

4. Intermediate Coat
We used SK Kaken’s water-based Cerami Silicon for the paint.
The expected durability from the manufacturer is said to be about 12 to 15 years.
The durability may vary depending on sunlight and other factors.

5. Top Coat
This is the finishing of the exterior wall painting.

6. Painting of Auxiliary Parts (Rain Gutter, Eaves)
We thoroughly paint everything that can be painted.
Fascia (Nippon Paint/Fine Urethane)
Kiri-Yoke (Nippon Paint/Fine Urethane)
Rain Gutter (Nippon Paint/Fine Urethane)
Eaves (Nippon Paint/Ken Ace G-Ⅱ)

7. Cleaning
This completes the construction!
About the Roofing Material
The roofing material used is Ridgeway from Asahi Fiberglass.
Ridgeway comes with a 10-year manufacturer warranty.
Since it uses natural stone that is baked onto the surface, it is a roofing material that does not require painting, which helps reduce maintenance costs!
Additionally, because it uses fine natural stones on the surface, you won’t be troubled by the sound of rain.
Moreover, it is a lightweight roofing material, making it strong against earthquakes and providing seismic resistance.
You can choose from five colors: Dual Black, Dual Brown, Harvard Slate, Vintage Green, and Earthen Cedar.
The cover work with Harvard slate was finished very well!
The customer was extremely satisfied, and I was very happy too!
Thank you for your request!!
What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost as it is and placing a new roof on top of it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is laid over, it is also referred to as “overlapping roofing.”
Advantages of the Overlay Method
Since a “new roof” is placed over the “current roof,” demolition work is almost unnecessary, meaning that very little waste is generated.
This is its biggest feature, leading to various advantages.
The only parts that require demolition and waste disposal are the ridge cap, so compared to complete roof replacement, the cost is lower.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for details, please refer to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare website).
Some building materials used in constructions before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to demolish due to their high environmental impact, and the costs for demolition and waste disposal are also high. The overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
Some may wonder, “Is it safe to live in a building that uses asbestos-containing materials?” but rest assured. Unless they are destroyed or crushed, they will not disperse into the air.
If you are unsure about the type of roof in your home, please feel free to consult us.
Additionally, it can be completed in a shorter time frame compared to painting or complete roof replacement. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn makes the costs lower.
The psychological anxiety of having to live in a different environment is also reduced.
When scaffolding is set up, there may be inconveniences such as difficulty in entering and exiting or opening windows. Being able to return to normal life in a short period is a significant advantage.
Our company specializes in roofing work, but the roof overlay method is the most frequently performed work we undertake. We are very grateful that we are continuously able to carry out roof overlay projects without interruption.
