This is a case study of exterior renovations in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
There are several types of exterior renovations, and the work this time includes roof overlay (Yokodana Roof αs), eaves flashing, and rain gutter replacement (Panasonic/Iron Round 105)!
We implemented measures against leaks through roofing and rain gutter work!

Roof overlay construction procedure
1. Removal of existing ridge flashing and snow guards

The roofing used is Nissin Kogyo/Kappa 23!
It is made of modified asphalt roofing material, which is said to have double the durability of regular asphalt roofing.
As a primary waterproofing measure, if the roofing is properly installed, there will be no leaks!

4. Fabricating accessories (curved eaves and gables)
The materials used for the accessories will be galvalume steel.

Once the installation reaches the ridge, we will set up the necessary materials to fix the ridge cap, known as the “kanban.” There are two types of kanban: cedar and resin, and this time we used the resin type!
The resin type is expected to have three times the durability compared to the cedar type!
5. Processing of Ridge Cap and Sealing at Various Locations
We will process and install the ridge cap and ventilation ridge. We will thoroughly apply sealing on the inside of the joints.
The nails and screws used for fixing are made of stainless steel, which is resistant to rust! [/chat]
6. Cleaning
We will clean up the debris that has fallen onto the balcony and rain gutters. We will conduct a thorough cleaning to prevent injuries from nails and metal fragments. [/chat]
The roofing material used this time is the Horizontal Warm Roof αS from Nichiha Corporation.
The Horizontal Warm Roof αS comes with a 15-year coating warranty, 20-year rust warranty, and 25-year hole warranty.
It is a high-performance metal insulated roof made by integrally molding metal steel plates (high-durability painted Galvalume steel plates), insulation material (rigid polyurethane foam), and aluminum laminate backing.
It is lightweight and resistant to earthquakes, demonstrating excellent insulation performance throughout the year, achieving long maintenance due to its high durability.

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost as it is and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is laid over, it is also referred to as “overlapping roofing.”
Advantages of the Overlay Method
Since a “new roof” is placed over the “current roof,” demolition work is almost unnecessary, meaning that very little waste is generated.
This is the biggest feature and leads to various advantages.
The only parts that require demolition and waste disposal are the ridge cap, so compared to complete roof replacement, the cost is lower.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for more details, please refer to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Building materials used in constructions completed before 2004 may contain asbestos. Since materials containing asbestos have a high environmental impact, demolition is also difficult, and the costs for both demolition and waste disposal are high. The overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
Some may wonder if it is safe to live in a building that uses materials containing asbestos, but rest assured. As long as there is no destruction or crushing, it will not disperse into the air.

Additionally, it can be completed in a shorter time frame than painting or complete replacement. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn makes the costs lower.
This also reduces the psychological anxiety of having to live in an unusual environment.
If scaffolding is erected, you may experience inconveniences such as difficulty entering and exiting or not being able to open windows. Being able to return to your normal life in a short period is a significant advantage.

Procedure for Eaves Board Metal Covering and Gutter Replacement
The fascia boards and the nose cover (the fascia board on the side with the rain gutter) play a crucial role in preventing wind from negatively impacting your home.
During strong winds, such as those from typhoons, rain can blow in horizontally, so the fascia boards and nose covers help to disperse the wind, which also disperses the rain being blown in, making it less likely to reach the junction between the roof and the exterior wall materials. This helps to prevent wind-driven rain from entering.
Generally, maintenance for fascia boards and nose covers (the fascia board on the side with the rain gutter) is done through “painting,” but when there is overall damage that cannot be repaired by painting, metal work is performed.
Metal work for the fascia board involves a renovation where Galvalume steel sheets are placed over the fascia board.
This is also referred to as metal wrapping or covering work.
In this case, since there was overall deterioration, we carried out metal covering work!

Since we are replacing the eaves gutter this time, we will proceed with the removal!
2. Flat Sheet Metal Processing

4. Caulking Treatment
We will carry out caulking treatment.
5. Rain Gutter Installation
This time, we will replace the eaves gutter with a new one!
6. Cleaning and Water Flow Test to Complete!
For the eaves gutter, we used Panasonic/Iron Round 105.
It has strength due to the steel plate inside.
