Roof Remodeling | What is Roofing? Introducing the Important Building Material, Roofing Sheets!
Hello!
I am Yamanaka from Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd., a specialist in roofing, exterior wall painting, and exterior renovations located in Aoba-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture!
This time, I would like to introduce you to the important roofing material, roofing sheets!
Roofing sheets are the “waterproof sheets for roofs” laid under the main roof.
They are also referred to as “underlayment materials.”
Additionally, since many roofing sheets are made of asphalt, they are often called asphalt roofing as well.
Many people think that the roofing material itself prevents rain, but it is not widely known that roofing materials cannot prevent all rainfall.
The roofing sheet completely shuts out any rainwater that the roofing material could not prevent.
The Purpose of Laying Roofing = Waterproofing
The purpose of laying roofing is solely for waterproofing.
The roofing material serves to protect the roofing sheet. Of course, roofing materials also have waterproofing functions, but since they cannot prevent all rainwater, roofing sheets are an essential building material.
Main Roles of Roofing Materials
Roofing Material = Primary Waterproofing
During light rain, roofing materials alone can sufficiently fulfill the waterproofing function.
Rainwater flows over the roofing material and drains into the rain gutter.
Roofing = Secondary Waterproofing
During storms such as typhoons, rainwater inevitably penetrates beneath the roofing material.
The rainwater that has entered flows over the roofing sheet and is drained through the rain gutter.
Therefore, if there are holes in the roofing sheet, it can lead to leaks.
In this way, the roof maintains its waterproofing function through a double waterproofing structure.
The roofing sheet is the last line of defense against water, so choosing the appropriate type is crucial.
Types of Roofing Sheets
There are many types of roofing sheets available, ranging from low quality to high quality.
Tajima Roofing, the largest manufacturer of roofing sheets, offers 17 different products specifically for residential homes.
Here are the characteristics of the most commonly used roofing sheets.
Asphalt Roofing
The lowest grade and most affordable option is asphalt roofing.
As the name suggests, it is made from asphalt, which is absorbed into a paperboard material.
Asphalt is derived from crude oil and becomes soft at relatively low temperatures, allowing it to expand and contract with temperature changes on the roof, leading to deterioration over time.
Asphalt roofing that is over 10 years old may develop tears or holes.
Modified Asphalt Roofing
Asphalt roofing, as mentioned earlier, is prone to changes in condition due to temperature fluctuations, leading to deterioration. The solution to this problem is modified rubber asphalt roofing.
By mixing rubber and synthetic resins with asphalt to create the product, it minimizes changes in condition due to temperature and has less aging deterioration.
It is also referred to as modified asphalt, rubber asphalt roofing, or rubber asphalt.
It has about twice the durability of asphalt roofing and a lifespan of over 20 years.
In some cases, the roofing material may reach the end of its lifespan before the asphalt roofing does.
For roofing materials like Galvalume steel sheets that last for 30 years, it is recommended to use long-lasting roofing as well.
If you are planning to build a new roof or renovate, please use products that are equivalent to or better than modified asphalt roofing.
Our company recommends using modified asphalt roofing, which has a longer lifespan than the lowest grade asphalt roofing. Of course, this may vary based on customer requests, but when replacing or overlaying a roof, it is common to live for over 20 years, so it is ideal for the roofing’s lifespan to be the same as or longer than that of the roofing material to ensure peace of mind during that period.
Conversely, if you anticipate moving in about 10 years, that may not apply, so it can be case by case. Our company will propose construction plans that include not only roofing but also materials used, tailored to the needs of our customers and their living situations.
Adhesive Layer Roofing
This is a roofing sheet with one side (the back side) coated with an adhesive seal.
Since it does not use tacks or nails, it can be applied without making holes in the sheet.
There are also “delayed adhesive type” roofing sheets available that can be repositioned.
Immediately after application, it can be easily peeled off and reapplied.
Within a few hours of application, it exhibits strong adhesive power and waterproofing effects, making it ideal for roofs with gentle slopes or for renovations.
Master Roofing
Master roofing is the highest quality roofing sheet handled by Tajima Roofing.
It is expected to have a durability of nearly 60 years.
When using Master roofing, it is recommended to combine it with durable roofing materials.
Typically, residential roofs require renovation every 20 to 30 years, but by using long-lasting roofs and roofing sheets, it is possible to maintain roofing functionality for over half a century.
However, it is very expensive.
Roofing sheets become invisible once the roof is finished.
However, roofing sheets are essential materials that ultimately prevent leaks.
There are many types available, so let’s thoroughly investigate the properties of roofing sheets.
