Human-Powered Rotating Swing (Merry-Go-Round) Production! We collaborated to create it for the To-in Academy Festival!

Hello everyone! Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd. is here!

At Toin Gakuen (High School) in Aoba-ku, Yokohama,
we collaborated with students to create a
human-powered merry-go-round for the school festival!

Last year, we also assisted with the production, and
this year, we received requests from classes in other grades,
allowing us to successfully complete the project!
Thank you very much to everyone at Toin Gakuen for entrusting us with the performance for the school festival for two consecutive years!

Human-Powered Merry-Go-Round

While discussing the performances for the Toin Gakuen school festival, it seems that a student found a video of a rotating swing (merry-go-round) on TikTok, which sparked the idea.

The human-powered merry-go-round we made last year also didn’t have any media coverage on how to make it,
so we had to explore the necessary materials and construction methods,
but this time, we also referred to videos of rotating swings while figuring out the materials and construction methods!

The production took two days, and we visited for both days to start the work!

Production Process of the Rotating Swing (Merry-Go-Round)

Materials Used

・Steel pipes

・Rolling casters

・Pipe clamps

・Boards (for seats)

・Screws

・Rope, etc.

 

Material Transportation

 

 

 

First, we greeted the students and started with transporting the materials! The male students actively helped carry them to the classroom, making the transportation smooth!

Merry-Go-Round Base

 

 

 

Next, we start building the base, first laying down boards to protect the floor! We attach casters to the base, fixing one at each of the four corners (a total of four) to allow for rotation!

 

 

 

We will secure the center part so that we can install four swings.

Once the base is complete, we will start working on the main body for the swing installation! Thanks to the cooperation of the students, we were able to complete the main body on the first day!

The ropes and seats for the swings were done on the second day, and I was relieved that they moved smoothly without any issues!

On the second day, we created the seating part of the merry-go-round! We thread the rope through the swing seats to attach them to the main body, carefully determining the positions for drilling holes and how to attach the ropes with specialized tools, ensuring they are securely fixed. We reinforce them thoroughly so they won’t break from movement!

The students actively participated in cutting the wood and other tasks!

Finally, the human-powered merry-go-round is complete!

This time, even with four adults and students sitting at the same time, we were able to operate it without any issues, even at increased speeds!

We let the students try it out, and it seems they had a great time, which is a relief!

It was great to hear that the event was a huge success on the day as well!

Since we received another request this year following last year, we were happy to cooperate again.
Collaborating with students to create something for the school festival is quite rare, making it a valuable experience for our company.
