Hello!
This is Yamanaka from Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd., a specialist in roofing, exterior painting, and exterior renovations located in Aoba-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture!
This is a case study of exterior renovations in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture.
There are several types of exterior renovations, and this project involved the removal of a solar water heater and the replacement of ridge flashing!
We have removed the unnecessary solar water heater!
Kakeru Koumuten has extensive experience in the removal of solar panels and water heaters!
Recently, we have seen a significant increase in customers wishing to have their water heaters removed!

On this page, we will explain the actual results of the work performed by Kakeru Koumuten!

Thank you very much for choosing Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd. from among many contractors.

Procedure for Removing Solar Water Heaters

1. Drain the water from the storage tank

After confirming that the water supply to the water heater has been stopped, we will drain the water accumulated in the tank!
Since this may put a load on the roof, we will drain it slowly.

Be cautious as hot water may come out.

2. Disassemble the solar water heater

Disassemble into the storage tank and collector.
Lower each part one by one after disassembly.

Always work with at least two people.
Be careful during disassembly as the panel may suddenly slip off.

3. Lower the collector

Lower the collector (panel).
Support it with a rope and slide it down.
In some cases, an electric winch may be used.
In our case, we always perform this with at least four people.
We will lower it slowly while checking the safety of the surroundings.

4. Lower the storage tank

Lower the storage tank.
Like the collector, support it with a rope and slide it down.
Carefully check safety while lowering, just like with the collector.

5. Remove pipes and hoses

Remove hoses and other connections that were attached to the storage tank.

6. Collect all wires and debris

That’s all!

There are various types of solar water heaters. With the current focus on renewable energy such as natural energy, solar water heaters are evolving, and more lightweight and durable products are becoming available.

However, solar water heaters are generally heavy, with most products weighing close to 100kg even when empty.
It is common for the collector alone to weigh over 60kg. If the solar water heater is filled with water, it is not uncommon for its weight to exceed 300kg.

This means that such weight is placed on the roof, putting a strain on it.

Moreover, while the solar water heater is actively in use, it is fine, but as it ages and becomes unused, the supporting equipment for the solar water heater deteriorates.

If the bolts or wires that secure the main body of the solar water heater deteriorate, it may not withstand disasters such as heavy rain or typhoons.

Since the water heater is basically secured only by wires, if the wires deteriorate and break, it will simply be sitting on the roof.

I saw a water heater fall from the roof onto a car during Typhoon No. 19 in 2019….

Therefore, it is important to remove unused solar water heaters as soon as possible!

Depending on the shape and slope of the roof, scaffolding may be necessary!

Procedure for Replacing Ridge Cap

The ridge cap is the metal covering that wraps around areas of the roof where roofing materials cannot be laid, such as at the peak of the roof.
It is susceptible to damage from wind disasters and can cause leaks.

1. Dismantling Existing Ridge

1. Dismantling Existing Ridge1. Dismantling Existing Ridge
Remove the old ridge cap and the wooden batten inside the ridge. Be careful not to break the roofing materials during this process.
It is recommended to replace the wooden batten inside every 10 to 15 years.
Once the ridge cap is removed, there will be a batten inside.

2. Installing New Batten

2. Installing New Batten
We will install a new batten. There are types of battens made from cedar and resin, and this time we used a cedar batten!

3. Sealing Ridge Cap Joints

3. Sealing Ridge Cap Joints
Seal the inside of the overlaps to enhance strength and waterproofing.

4. Installing New Ridge Cap

4. New ridge cap installation
We will process and install at the ends and joints!

5. Clean up and finish!
