Roof Overlay Method (Roof Repair) | Construction Procedure
1. Existing Ridge and Snow Stop Demolition
The area in the middle of the photo with a hole is where the ventilation ridge was installed.
The ventilation ridge serves to release heat and moisture from the attic!
Once the durability period is exceeded, corrosion and discoloration can occur, leading to the detachment or scattering of the ridge flashing.
2. Roofing Installation (Waterproof Sheet)
As a primary waterproofing measure, if the roofing is properly installed, there will be no leaks. We will ensure it is securely adhered to prevent it from blowing away. The roofing material we will use this time, Alma, has a durability of about 20 to 25 years, so we have used a roofing sheet with a matching durability!
3. Accessory Processing (Karakusa & Keraba)
Around the skylight is prone to leaks, so we will raise the roofing and apply waterproof tape before performing metal processing. The accessories used will be made of galvalume steel!
4. Main Construction (Nichiha / Alma)
Around the skylight, we will create a waste board with sheet metal processing to prevent rainwater intrusion.
Once we have installed up to the ridge, we will set up the necessary materials to fix the ridge cap, known as the “kanban.” Our company offers three types of kanban: cedar, resin, and Galvalume steel, and this time we used resin!
Resin products can be expected to have twice the durability of cedar products. We also recommend choosing materials with durability close to that of new roofing materials.
5. Ridge Cap Processing and Sealing
We also installed a new ventilation ridge!
For the screws used for fixing, we will use screw with packing made of stainless steel that is resistant to rust!
Screws with packing are less likely to come loose compared to nails, securely fixing the ridge cap to the kanban!
5. Cleaning
About Roofing Materials
The roofing material used is Nichiwa’s Alma. Alma comes with a 10-year manufacturer warranty.
Since it uses natural stone with baked-on paint on the surface, you won’t be troubled by the sound of rain. Moreover, as it is a roofing material that does not require painting, maintenance costs are kept low!
Excellent finish, durability, sound insulation, and wind resistance make it a lightweight option compared to other roofing materials, which reduces the sway during earthquakes, providing better earthquake resistance. In the roof overlay (cover method) work we conducted this time (roof repair), the roof will become double-layered, increasing the weight; however, Alma is a lightweight roofing material, making it suitable for the roof overlay (cover method) work (roof repair).
