Roof Overlay (Cover Method) Construction Steps

1. Dismantling Existing Roof Ridge Cap

We will dismantle unnecessary parts (ridge cap) for the

cover method!

2. Laying Roofing (Waterproof Sheet)

The roofing used is Jouyu Pulp Industry/Sunlight G!
It is made of modified asphalt roofing material, which is said to have double the durability of regular asphalt roofing.
As a primary waterproofing measure, if the roofing is solid, there will be no leaks!
We will ensure it is securely attached so it won’t blow away.

3. Fabrication of Accessories (Curly Patterns and Eaves)

Before the main roofing work, we will process and install accessories such as eaves and ornamental metal!
The materials used are made of galvalume steel.

4. Main Construction (D’s Roofing / Diplomat Star)

After processing the accessories, we will install the Diplomat Star roofing all the way to the ridge!
Once we reach the ridge, we will install necessary materials called “nail boards” to secure the ridge metal. There are various types of nail boards, including cedar, resin, and galvalume copper, and this time we used a resin type!
The resin type is expected to have 2 to 3 times the durability compared to cedar!

Additionally, the durability of the galvalume steel nail board is about 30 to 35 years, making it highly durable and unlike resin or cedar, it does not crack, so it is recommended!

5. Ridge Metal and Sealing at Various Locations

Next, we will process and install the ridge metal. We will apply sealing firmly on the inside of the joints.
For the wall edges, we will process and install materials called rain guard metal.
We will use stainless steel nails and screws that are resistant to rust!

About the Roofing Material Used This Time

The roofing material used is D’s Roofing’s Diplomat Star.
D’s Roofing comes with a 30-year warranty on the base material.
Our company also provides a 10-year construction warranty!

It is made of zinc-aluminum steel, which has the same composition as rust-resistant galvalume steel.

D’s Roofing reduces heat conduction to the steel layer due to the effect of the surface stone granules. This structure allows for sufficient air layers between the roofing material and the roof substrate, making it less likely to transfer heat to the attic compared to other roofing materials.
Moreover, the unevenness of the surface stone granules disperses raindrops, causing them to hit the surface smaller than on a normal smooth surface. As a result, the high-frequency noise caused by the micro-vibrations of the steel when raindrops hit, which is the source of the “noisy sound” of steel roofs, can be suppressed by the natural stone granule layer on the surface.

By adopting the “interlocking method” that integrates the roofing materials, it has performance that can withstand winds of 60m/s, as well as excellent fire resistance and waterproofing.

Canopy Metal Work

1. Demolition of Existing Canopy Metal

First, we will dismantle the existing canopy metal! The underlying rafters are corroded at the tips…

2. Installation of New Rafters

Next, we will process and install the new rafters to fit the dimensions! We will apply a preservative to the new rafters.

3. Installation of Roofing and Processing of Accessories

Next, we will apply the roofing sheet!

The roofing used is Tajima Roofing/Tadis Self!
It is made of a delayed adhesive modified asphalt roofing material, which is said to have double the durability of regular asphalt roofing.
With the roofing serving as the primary waterproofing, if it is properly installed, there will be no leaks!
We will secure it well to prevent it from blowing away.

On top of that, we will process and install ornamental pieces called karakusa! The ornamental pieces used are made of Galvalume steel!

4. Sheet Metal Processing and Sealing

Next, we will process the sheet metal and apply sealing! Since it is made of Galvalume steel, it is resistant to rust! After applying caulking, the work will be completed!

5. Completion

Finally, we will remove the masking tape and check all the details before completing the work!

6. Cleaning

We will clean up any debris that has fallen onto the balcony or rain gutters. We will thoroughly remove nails and metal scraps to prevent injuries.

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?

The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost intact and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. This method is also referred to as “overlapping roofing” since the roofs are layered on top of each other.

Advantages of the Overlay Method

Since a “new roof” is placed over the “current roof,” there is almost no need for demolition work, meaning very little waste is generated.
This is its most significant feature, leading to various advantages.

The only part that requires demolition and waste disposal is the ridge cap, so compared to a full roof replacement, the cost is lower.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for details, please visit the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Some building materials used in structures built before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to dismantle due to their high environmental impact, resulting in high costs for both demolition and waste disposal. The roof overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.

Some may wonder, “Is it safe to live in a building that uses asbestos-containing materials?” but rest assured. As long as there is no destruction or crushing, it will not disperse into the air.
If you are unsure about the type of roof on your home, please feel free to consult us.

Additionally, the construction can be completed in a shorter period than painting or a full roof replacement. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn makes the overall cost lower.
The psychological anxiety of having to live in an unusual environment is also reduced.
When scaffolding is set up, you may experience inconveniences such as difficulty entering and exiting or opening windows. Being able to return to your normal life in a short period is a significant advantage.

Our company specializes in roofing work, but roof overlay method projects are the most frequently performed jobs we handle. We are very grateful that we are continuously able to carry out roof overlay method projects without interruption.

Summary

This concludes our track record of roof renovations in Machida City!
When installing solar panels, we recommend using the roof overlay method or roof replacement with high-durability, maintenance-free roofing materials rather than just roof painting!

This is because once solar panels are installed, they will need to be removed and reattached during the next roof renovation.
Since the cost of removing and reattaching solar panels is high, we recommend roof overlay work before installing solar panels.
