This is a case study of an exterior renovation project in Tsuzuki-ku, Yokohama.
The content of this roof renovation involved the removal of the rooftop water heater and the re-roofing using Ridgeway and Stanby 455!

Re-roofing is a measure against roof leaks that involves dismantling and removing the existing roofing materials to install a new roof.

Since the lower roof has a gentle slope (the roof’s incline is mild), we used vertical corrugated metal Stanby.

The existing roofing material is asbestos-containing slate. Although the overlay method is generally recommended, we proposed re-roofing because the underlying structure was severely damaged.
Asbestos-containing slate incurs high disposal costs, so the overlay method is recommended before the underlying structure deteriorates.

Procedure for Re-roofing the Large Lower Roof

1. Dismantling Existing Roofing Materials

We will dismantle the existing water heater and roofing materials!

2. Installing New Sheathing

After dismantling the existing roofing material, we will process and install new sheathing boards to fit the dimensions!

3. Installing Roofing (Waterproof Sheet)

The roofing used is Jouyu Pulp Industry/Sunlight G!
It is made of modified asphalt roofing, which is said to have double the durability of regular asphalt roofing.
As a primary waterproofing measure, if the roofing is solid, there will be no leaks! We will ensure it is firmly attached to prevent it from blowing away.

4. Fabrication of Accessories (Karakusa & Keraba)

Before the main roofing work, we will process and install accessories such as keraba and karakusa metal!
The materials used for the accessories are galvalume steel plates.

5. Main Construction (Asahi Fiberglass/Ridgeway)

Large Roof (Asahi Fiberglass/Ridgeway)

After processing the fittings, we will install the Ridgeway main body up to the ridge of the large roof! We will apply single cement at the overlapping areas during the construction.

Lower Roof (Stanby 455)

For the lower roof, we will install the main body of Stanby 455! At the wall edge, we will raise the Stanby main body to enhance waterproofing.
Once completed, we will install the necessary materials for fixing the ridge board, known as the “kanban.” There are types of kanban made from cedar and resin, and this time we used the resin type!
The resin type is expected to have three times the durability compared to the cedar type!

7. Processing of Ridge Board and Sealing at Various Locations

We will process and install the ridge board. We will firmly apply sealing on the inside of the joints.
At the wall edge, we will process and install a component called the rain guard board.
The nails and screws used for fixing are made of stainless steel, which is resistant to rust!

8. Cleaning

We will clean up the debris that has fallen onto the balcony and rain gutters. We conduct this thoroughly as items like nails and metal scraps can lead to injuries. We will also wipe away any footprints left on the roof to keep it clean.

About Roofing Material (Ridgeway)

The roofing material used is Ridgeway from Asahi Fiberglass.
Ridgeway comes with a 10-year manufacturer warranty.
Since it uses natural stone that is baked onto the surface, it is a roofing material that does not require painting, thus reducing maintenance costs!
The use of fine natural stones on the surface means you won’t be troubled by rain noise.
Additionally, it is a lightweight roofing material, making it strong against earthquakes and providing seismic resistance.

*After installation, the surface decorative stones may fall off for about a week, but there is no issue with quality.
