Removal of Solar Water Heater from Kakeru Koumuten

1. Drain the Water from the Storage Tank

Confirm that the water supply to the water heater has been stopped, then drain the water accumulated in the tank!
Since this may put a load on the roof, drain it slowly.

Be careful as hot water may come out.

2. Dismantle the Solar Water Heater

Dismantle into the storage tank and collector.
After dismantling, lower each part one by one.

Always work with at least two people.
Be cautious as the panel may suddenly slip off during dismantling.

3. Lower the Collector

Lower the collector (panel).
Support it with a rope and slide it down.
There may be cases where an electric winch is used.
In our case, we always do this with at least four people.

Carefully lower it while checking the safety of the surroundings.

4. Lower the Storage Tank

Lower the storage tank.
Like the collector, support it with a rope and slide it down.

We may use an electric winch for lifting.

4. Lower the Storage Tank
During the operation, carefully lower it while checking the safety of the surroundings, just like with the collector.

5. Remove Pipes and Hoses

We will remove the pipes and hoses that were connected to the storage tank and water heater.

Care must be taken when disassembling these components.

5.Remove pipes and hoses

6. Collect all wires and debris

Finally, we will collect all wires and unnecessary debris from the work area.

We will also conduct cleaning at the same time!

6.Collect all wires and debris

That concludes the process.

There are various types of solar water heaters. With the current focus on renewable energy such as natural energy, solar water heaters are evolving, and more lightweight and durable products are emerging.

However, solar water heaters are generally heavy, with most products weighing close to 100kg even when empty.
It is common for the collector alone to weigh over 60kg. If the solar water heater is filled with water, it is not uncommon for its weight to exceed 300kg.

This means that such weight is placed on the roof, putting a burden on it.

While the solar water heater is still in operation, it’s fine, but once it becomes old and unused, the equipment supporting the solar water heater will deteriorate.

If the bolts or wires that secure the main body of the solar water heater deteriorate, it may not withstand disasters such as heavy rain or typhoons.

Since the water heater is basically secured only by wires, if the wires deteriorate and break, it will simply be sitting on the roof.

During Typhoon No. 19 in 2019, I saw a water heater fall from a roof onto a car…

Therefore, it is important to remove unused solar water heaters as soon as possible!

⚠️Depending on the shape and slope of the roof, scaffolding may be necessary!

Cost of Removing Roof Water Heaters

The cost for removing the water heater by our company is from 80,000 yen including construction fees!

If the roof slope is steep, scaffolding will be required, so
if the roof slope is 4 shaku slope or less, the water heater can be removed without scaffolding!

As a general guideline, if you are only performing the removal of the water heater, it will cost several tens of thousands of yen.

Removing the water heater is one of the necessary tasks during building renovations or equipment updates, so make sure to have it checked by a reliable contractor and get an accurate estimate!

Necessity of Removal

6. Collecting all wires and debris

Removing the water heater may be necessary for several reasons.

One reason is when the water heater no longer operates efficiently due to aging or malfunction. Old water heaters tend to have low energy efficiency and can be difficult to repair, so it is advisable to replace them with new ones.

Additionally, removal is necessary when the purpose of the building changes or when there is a need to introduce new equipment or systems. For example, when installing renewable energy systems like solar water heaters, it is necessary to remove the existing water heater.

Removal Procedure

  1. Stop Water Supply: First, stop the water supply to the water heater and disconnect the power. This is important for safe operation.
  2. Drain Water: If there is water accumulated in the water heater, drain it out.
  3. Cutting Pipes: Cut the pipes connecting the water heater to the building and remove hoses and fittings.
  4. Disconnect Electrical Connections: For electric water heaters, disconnect the electrical connections and turn off the power supply.
  5. Remove Water Heater: Use appropriate tools to remove the water heater itself. Multiple personnel may be needed for handling large water heaters.

1. Before Construction (Colonial)

1.Before construction (Colonial)

We will temporarily dismantle the solar panels and the base rack. Since we will be replacing it with a dedicated rack for Galtect, all existing base racks and fittings will be disposed of.

2. Completion of Cover Work

2.Completion of Cover Work

This is after the removal of the solar panels and the completion of the Galtect roof overlay work.

Generally, exterior renovations using the Galtect overlay method can have a lifespan of 15 to over 30 years. However, this is merely a general guideline, and the actual lifespan can vary depending on the quality of the construction, maintenance performed, and local weather conditions.

For examples of Galtect cover work, please refer to our detailed explanation on Super Galtect Construction Examples!

3. Installation of New Base Rack Fittings

3. Installation of new base rack hardware
The existing panel base was fixed by drilling holes in the roof, but the new hardware secures the solar panels in a way that grips the Galtect main body. By avoiding drilling holes, the risk of leaks and the burden on the roof are reduced.
There are applicable brackets for each manufacturer and model of solar panel, so there may be no applicable brackets for older solar panels.

4. Installation of Solar Panels

Installation of solar panels
The removed solar panels will be put back in place to complete the job!
