In this article, I will introduce recommended paints and precautions for each type of exterior wall, along with how to distinguish between different types of exterior walls!
Introduction
The actual usage ratio of exterior wall materials is as follows:
＊Ceramic-based siding: approximately 70%
＊Mortar exterior walls: approximately 13%
＊Metal siding: approximately 9%
＊ALC: approximately 3%

Ceramic-based Siding
Ceramic-based siding is made by mixing wood-based fibers with cement, shaping and processing it.
A precaution for ceramic-based siding is that it may deteriorate from the caulking parts, allowing rainwater to infiltrate the interior, so inspections and repairs are necessary every 7 to 10 years.
Additionally, ceramic-based siding has the characteristic of being heat-retaining, which can lead to issues such as paint film swelling.
Repeated heat retention, drying, and rainwater infiltration can cause the siding boards to deform and warp.
To prevent this, it is recommended to use a highly breathable paint that allows moisture to pass through.

Elastic paint (which maintains a film that follows cracks and is suitable for repainting) works well, and
since mortar easily absorbs water, it is advisable to choose paints that emphasize breathability considering the possibility of water seeping in through damages.
High-purity acrylic paint is recommended due to its high elasticity and long durability.

Metal Siding
Increasingly popular metal siding.
It is an exterior wall material made from metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, and Galvalume steel.
Currently, stainless steel and aluminum are expensive, so products made from Galvalume steel are becoming widespread.
Compared to ceramic siding, it has the advantage of being lightweight, but it can rust due to paint film peeling, so regular maintenance is essential.
The biggest weakness and point of caution is that, being metal, it is prone to rust.
If rust occurs, it must be removed before painting.
The surface can easily become hot, making elastic paint unsuitable.
Recently, there are cases with fluorine coatings or hydrophilic treatments, and those with such treatments often do not allow paint to adhere, requiring the use of appropriate primers.

ALC
ALC has a certain level of popularity and market share.
It is a lightweight concrete panel created by mixing a foaming agent with concrete to incorporate fine air bubbles.
Lightweight and durable, it has high thermal insulation and soundproofing properties, and since it is concrete, it does not burn.
However, ALC has its weaknesses; being porous, it easily absorbs water, which is a point of caution.
Water absorption can lead to internal damage.
The key is how quickly the absorbed moisture can be expelled,
and to prevent moisture from being trapped inside the exterior wall, it is advisable to use highly breathable paint for ALC as well.

How to Distinguish Exterior Wall Materials?
Presence or Absence of Joints
You can determine this by the presence or absence of joints.
If there are joints → ・Ceramic siding ・ALC
If there are joints but they are not prominent → ・Metal siding
If there are no joints → ・Mortar exterior wall
Additionally, you can also determine by the direction and position of the joints.
Ceramic siding will always have horizontal joints at about 3 meters from the ground.
Many houses hide the joints with a cornice, so houses with a cornice are likely to be ceramic siding.
The width of ceramic siding is mostly 455mm, so if you measure with a tape measure and the width is 455mm, it can be confidently determined as a ceramic siding wall.
Wall Thickness
In the case of ALC, it is often more than 100mm thick, which is about twice the thickness of ceramic siding, making it considerably thicker compared to other exterior wall materials.
When you open the windows of your house and look from the side, if the exterior wall material appears quite thick, it is likely ALC.
Feeling and Sound When Tapped
ALC, ceramic siding, and mortar all use cement, but
metal siding is made of steel plates, so the feeling and sound when tapped are different.
If there is a copper edge in the substrate, the feeling and sound when tapped may be difficult to distinguish, so try tapping in different places a few times!
