Interior Work Process in Meguro Ward, Tokyo

Skylight Sealing Work

1. Insulation Installation

First, we will install the insulation! By adding insulation, it reduces the transmission of outdoor heat and cold into the room, helping to prevent condensation and mold growth. This also leads to improved heating and cooling efficiency and better indoor environments.

2. Gypsum Board Installation

We will install the gypsum board! It is installed flat so that wallpaper can be applied, and putty is also applied to eliminate any unevenness.

What is Gypsum Board?

This is a board made from a white powder (gypsum) that hardens when mixed with water and becomes hard when dried.
It is commonly used as a material for walls and ceilings and has fire-resistant properties.

3. Wallpaper Installation

Finally, we will install the wallpaper!
We will check the alignment with the existing parts and carry out the work to minimize the visibility of repair marks.

Creating a Storage Room

1. Existing Toilet Removal

This time, we are converting the existing toilet, which was used infrequently, into a storage room.

First, we will remove the existing toilet! We will take out the existing toilet bowl, tank, and seat, and disconnect the water supply pipe and drainage connection.

2. Water Stopping Work & Floor Material Replacement

We will carry out water stopping work and replace the floor material! We will install special caps on the ends of the unused water supply and drainage pipes to prevent water from leaking. After that, we will install the floor material (cushioned vinyl flooring).

Cushioned Vinyl Flooring
This flooring material is resistant to moisture and dirt, making it easy to clean.

After the Skylight Hole Sealing Work

By sealing the unnecessary skylight and adding insulation, we have improved the insulation properties!

After the Toilet Removal and Conversion to Storage Room Work

By removing the rarely used toilet and converting it into a storage room, we were able to make effective use of the space!

Interior Renovation Guidelines

1. Wallpaper Renovation

  • 10 to 15 years
Wallpaper deteriorates depending on usage frequency and environment, so it is advisable to consider replacement every 10 to 15 years. In particular, in areas with high humidity such as kitchens and bathrooms, or in places with strong sunlight, fading, dirt, and mold can occur more quickly.

2. Flooring Renovation

  • 10 to 15 years
Flooring tends to show wear and scratches, so it’s a good idea to consider renovations every 10 to 15 years. Especially in households where heavy furniture is frequently moved or where pets are present, wear can progress quickly. It’s important not only to repair the surface of the flooring but also to check the condition underneath and carry out renovations as needed.

3. Toilet Renovation

  • 10 years
The general guideline for replacing a toilet is about every 10 years.

4. Kitchen and Bathroom Renovation

  • 10 to 20 years
Kitchens and bathrooms are used frequently, which can lead to aging and deterioration of the fixtures. In particular, the wear of sinks, stoves, and bathtubs can progress quickly, so it’s advisable to consider renovations every 10 to 20 years. Additionally, replacing them with the latest fixtures can improve usability and energy efficiency.

5. Lighting and Outlet Renovation

  • 10 to 20 years
Replacing lighting fixtures and outlets is generally done when they look outdated or their functionality declines. Incorporating the latest LED lighting and smart features can enhance convenience and energy efficiency.

6. Door and Window Renovation

  • 15 to 20 years
Renovations for doors and windows are considered when you notice difficulty in opening and closing or a decline in insulation performance. In particular, replacing insulation materials or installing double-glazed windows can significantly improve energy efficiency.

7. Air Conditioning and Heating Equipment Renovation

  • 10 to 15 years
Air conditioning and heating equipment may experience a decline in performance after about 10 years, so it is recommended to replace or maintain them every 10 to 15 years. Especially for air conditioners, filters and internal dirt can accumulate, leading to reduced efficiency.

8. Overall Renovation (Complete Interior Update)

  • 20 to 30 years
Renovating the entire interior of the house (walls, flooring, ceilings, fixtures, etc.) is typically done every 20 to 30 years.

Points to Consider When Deciding on Renovation Timing

Changes in Lifestyle

It’s a good idea to create opportunities to reassess the interior in line with changes in family composition or work and hobbies.

Malfunctions in Equipment or Functions

For example, if heating and cooling have become less effective or if the usability of the kitchen or bathroom has declined, these signs indicate it’s time for renovation.

Appearance and Comfort

If dirt, scratches, or fading have become noticeable, or if you feel the interior has become outdated, it’s time to consider renovation.
