Hello everyone!Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd.!

What we are introducing here is “What is difficult-to-attach siding?”!
You probably know that siding exteriors require painting. However, did you know that there are some siding exteriors that are difficult for paint to adhere to, making repainting challenging? This lesser-known “difficult-to-attach siding” can lead to issues if you are not aware of it, so be careful!
What is difficult-to-attach siding?
Difficult-to-attach siding refers to siding boards that have a special coating on the surface! Mainly, it refers to coatings with functions such as “photocatalytic,” “hydrophilic,” “inorganic,” and “fluorine,” which are resistant to dirt and less prone to fading.
It is often misunderstood as maintenance-free, but compared to regular siding, it is just less prone to dirt, and that does not mean no maintenance is required.
Even if it’s not visible, deterioration progresses steadily, leading to the growth of mold and moss, as well as cracks. Therefore, exterior wall painting will eventually be necessary after about 10 years.
Difficult-to-adhere siding is resistant to dirt, but at the same time, the paint used during repainting may not adhere well. If you use regular siding paint (primer) without a dedicated primer, there is a risk that the paint film may peel off.
How to Identify Siding
① Chalking Phenomenon
In some buildings, the chalking phenomenon may begin to occur around 8 to 10 years. However, the paint film of difficult-to-adhere siding is highly durable, so chalking may not occur even after 10 years. If a building has not shown any chalking phenomenon after more than 10 years, it may be made of difficult-to-adhere siding.
② No Fading
As time passes, the color of the paint film tends to fade. This is especially true in sunny areas where fading occurs more quickly. Difficult-to-adhere siding often retains its appearance, gloss, and shine even after 10 years.
If there is no fading after 10 years and the gloss and shine remain, it is highly likely that it is difficult-to-adhere siding.
③ Built After 2001
If the building was constructed after 2001, it is likely to be made of difficult-to-adhere siding. This is because technologies such as photocatalysts and inorganic materials began to be used for exterior walls after 2001.
For buildings constructed before that, the likelihood of them being made of difficult-to-adhere siding is considered low.
④ The Paint Film Does Not Dissolve with Lacquer Thinner
Regular siding will have its surface paint film dissolve and color fade when rubbed with lacquer thinner. However, difficult-to-adhere siding has a strong paint film that does not dissolve even with lacquer thinner.
If the above applies, it is highly likely that you have “difficult-to-adhere siding boards.”
Before trouble arises…
We often hear about troubles caused by difficult-to-adhere siding.
A major cause of this is the lack of knowledge among painting companies. Due to insufficient knowledge about difficult-to-adhere siding, they may not be able to distinguish the wall materials and end up painting them, leading to troubles. In reality, many companies with strong sales colors often do not know how to distinguish them.
At Kakeru Koumuten, we excel not only in technique but also in knowledge, so such troubles will never occur!
What kind of troubles can occur with other contractors?
As mentioned above, if you paint the exterior walls of “difficult-to-adhere siding” with regular paint after about 10 years of construction, the paint film can easily peel off.
It is not realistic to completely restore the peeled exterior walls. There are stripping agents that can remove the paint film, but using those agents can dissolve the exterior material itself, leading to the trouble of having to replace the exterior walls. If you unknowingly paint the exterior walls, a few years later, you may have to spend three times more on replacing the siding!
It is very important to be aware of this in advance, so please be careful!
Paint Used for Primer
Here is an introduction to the basic paint we use!
SK Kaken / Water-based Hybrid Sealer

Conventional sealers sometimes do not exhibit sufficient adhesion. Additionally, solvent types may have usage restrictions in urban areas due to odor issues. This is where the “SK Kaken / Water-Based Hybrid Sealer” comes in to solve such problems!
Our company frequently uses SK Kaken paints, so we are utilizing the product mentioned above, but there seem to be similar products available from “Nippon Paint” and “Kansai Paint” as well!
With dedicated undercoating materials, even difficult-to-adhere siding can be painted!
If your home has difficult-to-adhere siding, rest assured that painting maintenance is still possible!
Is clear coating possible for difficult-to-adhere siding?
To conclude, clear coating for difficult-to-adhere siding is indeed possible!
Here, we will introduce the paints our company uses for painting difficult-to-adhere siding!
Kikusui Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. / Royal Seraclear
Kikusui’s “Royal Seraclear” is designed to adhere strongly to difficult-to-adhere siding!
The finish is beautiful, and the paint rank is high-grade silicone, providing a durability of approximately 15 years!
There is also a fluorine version called “SP Power Fluorine Clear”, which is expected to have a longer durability than “Royal Seraclear”!
As far as we know, the two items above are clear coatings compatible with difficult-to-adhere siding (photocatalytic)!
Summary of Difficult-to-Adhere Siding
How was that? This time, we provided a brief introduction to difficult-to-adhere siding.
There are quite a few painting contractors who unknowingly apply paint without knowing about difficult-to-adhere siding. It’s not that they intentionally want to ruin the exterior walls; it simply happens because they were unaware. If a special primer is not used, the paint can peel off and become damaged, leaving no option but to replace the siding.
