Hello!
I am Yamanaka from Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd., a specialist in roofing, exterior painting, and exterior renovations located in Aoba-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture!
This is a case study of a roof renovation project in Chofu City, Tokyo.
The work involved the removal of a solar water heater and roof overlay (cover method) using Ridgeway!
We implemented leak prevention measures through the roofing work!
We received this request from Company A, a remodeling company we always work with!
Thank you very much for choosing Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd. from among many contractors.

Solar Water Heater Removal Procedure
1. Drain the water from the storage tank
We drain it slowly as it may put a load on the roof.
2. Disassemble the solar water heater
Disassemble into the storage tank and collector.
We lower each part one by one after disassembly.

3. Lower the collector
We lower the collector (panel).
We lower it while supporting it with a rope, sliding it down.
In some cases, we may use an electric winch for lifting.
4. Lower the storage tank
We lower the storage tank.
Similar to the collector, we lower it while supporting it with a rope, sliding it down.
5. Remove pipes and hoses
We will remove hoses and other items connected to the storage tank.
6. Collect all wires and debris
There are various types of solar water heaters. With the current focus on renewable energy such as natural energy, solar water heaters have also evolved, and there are more lightweight and durable products available. However, solar water heaters are generally heavy, with most products weighing nearly 100kg even when empty. It is common for the collector alone to weigh over 60kg. If the solar water heater is filled with water, its weight can exceed 300kg. This means that such weight is placed on the roof, putting a strain on it.
While the solar water heater is still in use, that’s fine, but as it ages and becomes unused, the supporting equipment for the solar water heater deteriorates. If the bolts and wires that secure the main body of the solar water heater deteriorate, it may not withstand disasters such as heavy rain or typhoons.
Therefore, it is important to remove unused solar water heaters as soon as possible!
Roof Overlay Construction Procedure
1. Dismantling existing ridge and snow guards
We will dismantle only the ridge flashing and snow guards that may obstruct the overlay work.
2. Installing roofing (waterproof sheet)
The roofing used this time is modified asphalt. It is expected to have double the durability of asphalt roofing!
3. Fabricating accessories (kakusa and keraba)
We will process and install the keraba and kakusa.
4. Main body construction
Once the main body is installed, we will place a wood batten at the ridge and wall edges. This time, we used a resin batten that is resistant to corrosion!

5. Fabricating ridge flashing
We will process and install the ridge flashing and ventilation ridge. We will firmly apply sealing on the inside of the joints.
We will also process and install a component called rain guard flashing at the wall edges.

6. Cleaning
We will remove any debris that has fallen around the ridge cap, the house, and inside the rain gutters, and perform a thorough cleaning.
We strive to ensure that the area looks cleaner after the work than it did before!
This concludes the construction!
The roofing material used is the Ridgeway from Asahi Fiberglass.
The Ridgeway comes with a 10-year manufacturer warranty.
Since it uses natural stone that is baked onto the surface, it is a roofing material that does not require painting, thus reducing maintenance costs!
Additionally, because it uses fine natural stones on the surface, you won’t be troubled by rain noise.
Moreover, it is a lightweight roofing material, making it strong against earthquakes and providing excellent seismic resistance.

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost as it is and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. It is also referred to as “overlapping roofing” because the roof is laid on top of another.
Advantages of the Overlay Method
Since you are placing a “new roof” over the “current roof,” demolition work is almost unnecessary, meaning that very little waste is generated.
This is its most significant feature and leads to various advantages.
The only parts that require demolition and waste disposal are the ridge caps, making it more cost-effective compared to complete roof replacement.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (please refer to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website for details).
Some building materials used in constructions completed before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to dismantle due to their high environmental impact, and the costs for demolition and waste disposal are also high. The overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
Some of you may be wondering, “Is it safe to live in a building that uses materials containing asbestos?” Rest assured. As long as it is not destroyed or crushed, it will not disperse into the air.
If you are unsure about the type of roof on your home, please feel free to consult us.
Additionally, we can complete the work in a shorter time frame than painting or re-roofing. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn makes the expenses more affordable.
This also reduces the psychological anxiety of having to live in an unusual environment.
When scaffolding is set up, you may experience inconveniences such as difficulty entering and exiting or being unable to open windows. Being able to return to your normal life in a short period is a significant advantage.
Our company specializes in roofing work, and the roof overlay (cover method) is the most frequently performed service we offer. We are very grateful that we are continuously able to carry out roof overlay (cover method) projects without interruption.
