Hello! This is Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd.!
“I was told by a door-to-door salesperson that my roof is peeling… What should I do next?”
When such urgent issues arise, it’s natural to feel flustered.
In such times, we want you to make a sound judgment without panicking,
so we would like to introduce you to some response methods here.
We hope you find this helpful!
Sudden remarks from someone claiming to be a remodeling contractor! What should I do?
If someone claiming to be a remodeling contractor or a door-to-door salesperson suddenly rings your intercom and says,
“Your roof is peeling!” or “The metal sheeting is lifting!” or “You should repair your roof immediately!” it can cause anxiety. We especially want those who are feeling uneasy to read this. Additionally, we hope that those who happen to come across this article can use it as a reference for how to handle such situations in the future.
① Do not let them on the roof
First, if someone points out that your roof is peeling and offers to inspect it for free, do not let them on your roof easily.
It is true that some unscrupulous contractors may intentionally damage the roof after climbing up, making it seem as though the damage was pre-existing.
Not all door-to-door salespeople are unscrupulous, but allowing someone you don’t know onto your roof poses some risk, so it’s best to ask them to leave for now.
② Limit the conversation
Door-to-door salespeople are often skilled at conversation and may not leave easily. If they ask you questions about your home and you respond, you may find yourself caught in their rhythm, making it hard to refuse them. This is a common tactic used by unscrupulous contractors.
If they ask questions, you can respond with:
“I have a contractor I rely on, so I’m fine.”
“My husband (parents) makes all the decisions, so I will contact you if necessary.”
Make sure to decline firmly.
If by any chance you end up speaking face-to-face instead of through the intercom,
be sure to ask for the business card of the person who visited!
Even if it’s through the intercom,
it would be good to say, “Thank you for your advice. If anything comes up, may I ask you to leave your business card in the mailbox?”
In the case of a fraudulent contractor,
“The company name they are claiming to represent has nothing to do with them, and it was a case of impersonation.”
“They have some reason for not wanting to reveal their identity.” There is a high possibility that they will say, “I don’t have a business card.”
If you can get a business card, let’s look into that company.
Also, there are people who simply point out the condition of the roof and leave. While there are certainly those who genuinely care about the dangers during disasters and are pointing things out for your benefit,
on the contrary, there are cases where they visit after doing some background research on the age and gender of the residents.
In such contingencies, it’s best to limit sudden visits from them to just the intercom as much as possible.
③ Do not make a quick decision; always research and get multiple estimates
This is also a very important response method!
If you are approached by a visiting contractor or receive an estimate, be sure to research the contractor online!
Even if you are in a situation where you are suddenly pointed out and feeling rushed, never make a contract on the spot,
instead, research that contractor and obtain estimates from at least three reputable companies with good reviews!
At Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd., we are happy to respond to requests for multiple estimates.
Please do not feel guilty about getting multiple estimates;
feel free to request a rough estimate, on-site inspection, or free estimate!
