Roof Overlay Work Procedure for E Residence in Yokosuka City
1. Removal of Solar Panels
We will remove the solar panels installed on the existing roof.
2. Existing Ridge and Snow Stop Demolition
We will dismantle only the ridge flashing and snow stops that obstruct the roof overlay work.
The hole in the photo is for the ventilation ridge.
3. Roofing Installation (Waterproof Sheet)
The roofing used this time is modified asphalt. It offers double the durability of standard asphalt roofing!
4. Component Processing (Karakusa and Keraba)
We will process and install the keraba and karakusa.
5. Main Construction
Once the main body is installed, we will place the purlins at the ridge and wall edges. This time, we used cedar purlins, but there are also resin purlins that are resistant to corrosion.
6. Ridge Flashing Processing
We will process and install the ridge flashing and ventilation ridge. We will ensure that sealing is properly applied to the inside of the joints.
At the wall edge, we will process and install a component called rain stop flashing.
7. Cleaning
We will remove footprints that inevitably occur and clean up any debris that has fallen around the house and in the rain gutters.

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost as it is and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is laid over the existing one, it is also referred to as “overlapping roofing.”
Advantages of the Overlay Method
Since a “new roof” is placed over the “current roof,” almost no demolition work is required, meaning very little waste is generated.
This is the biggest feature and leads to various advantages.
The only part that requires demolition and waste disposal is the ridge cap, so compared to a full roof replacement, the cost is lower.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for details, please visit the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare website).
Some building materials used in structures built before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to dismantle due to their high environmental impact, resulting in high costs for both demolition and waste disposal.
