Roof Overlay Construction Procedure
1. Demolition of Existing Ridge and Snow Stops
We will dismantle only the ridge flashing and snow stops that would obstruct the overlay work.
2. Installation of Roofing (Waterproof Sheet)
The roofing used this time is modified asphalt. It offers double the durability compared to regular asphalt roofing!
3. Component Processing (Karukusa & Keraba)
We process and install keraba and karukusa sheet metal.
4. Main Construction
Once the main body is installed, we set up the purlin at the ridge and wall edges. This time, we used cedar purlins, but there are also resin purlins that are resistant to corrosion.
5. Ridge Cap Processing
We process and install ridge caps and ventilation ridges. We make sure to apply sealing thoroughly on the inside of the joints.
At the wall edge, we process and install a component called a rain stop sheet metal.
We also ensure that sealing is applied properly.
6. Cleaning
We remove footprints that inevitably get left behind and clean up any debris that has fallen around the house and in the rain gutters.
We strive to leave the site cleaner after the work than it was before!
That concludes the construction!
The roofing material used is the Super Galtect from Aijii Industry.
The Super Galtect comes with a manufacturer warranty of 15 years for the coating and 25 years for perforation.

Made of galvalume steel, it is resistant to rust.
Insulation material is tightly applied from end to end of the roofing material, creating a metal sheet that integrates the steel plate and insulation.
When installed, insulation is applied even to the parts where the roofing materials overlap, and the surface is coated with a high heat-insulating paint, allowing for a cool summer and warm winter.
Additionally, it has soundproofing properties, reducing the sound of rain.
Being lighter than other roofing materials, it also reduces the sway during earthquakes, providing earthquake resistance.

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost intact and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is laid over itself, it is also referred to as “overlapping roofing.”
Advantages of the Overlay Method
Since a “new roof” is placed over the “current roof,” demolition work is almost unnecessary, meaning that very little waste is generated.
This is its most significant feature, leading to various advantages.
The only part that requires demolition and waste disposal is the ridge cap, so compared to complete roof replacement, the cost is lower.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for details, please refer to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Some building materials used in structures constructed before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are challenging to dismantle due to their high environmental impact, and the costs for demolition and waste disposal are also high. The overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
Some may wonder, “Is it safe to live in a building that uses asbestos-containing materials?” but rest assured. As long as there is no destruction or crushing, it will not disperse into the air.
