Hello!
I am Yamanaka from Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd., a specialist in roofing, exterior painting, and exterior renovations located in Aoba-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture!
This is a case study of a roof renovation in Aoba-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture.
The work involved a roof overlay (cover method)!
We implemented leak prevention measures through the roof overlay!
We received this request from our long-time partner, D Construction Company!
Thank you very much for choosing Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd. from among many contractors.

Roof Overlay (Cover Method) Construction Steps
1. Demolition of Existing Ridge and Snow Stops
We will only dismantle the ridge flashing and snow stops that would obstruct the overlay work.

2. Installation of Sheathing
We will process and attach the sheathing.

3. Underlayment Installation
4. Air Gap Sheet Installation
The air gap sheet is a ventilation and waterproof underlayment material specifically for metal roofs.
It enhances “insulation performance,” “condensation prevention and durability,” and “soundproofing performance.”

5. Custom Fabrication (Karakusa, Keraba, Valley)
We process and install keraba, karakusa, and valley metal sheets.

6. Main Construction
Once the main body is installed, we place the purlin at the ridge and wall edges. This time, we used cedar purlins, but there are also resin purlins that are resistant to corrosion.
7. Ridge Cap Fabrication
We process and install the ridge cap. We firmly apply sealing on the inside of the joints.
At the wall edges, we process and install a component called rain stop metal.

8. Cleaning
We remove footprints and debris that inevitably fall around the house and inside the rain gutters, and we do a thorough cleaning.
We strive to leave the site cleaner after the work than it was before!
That concludes our work!
The finished product pleased our customers!
The roofing material used this time is Nichiha Corporation’s Yokodan Roof αS.
Yokodan Roof αS comes with a manufacturer warranty of 15 years for the coating, 20 years for red rust, and 25 years for perforation.
It is a high-performance metal insulated roof made of metal steel plates (high-durability coated Galvalume steel plates), insulation (rigid polyurethane foam), and aluminum laminated backing material, all molded together.
It is lightweight and earthquake-resistant, demonstrating excellent insulation performance throughout the year, achieving long maintenance due to its high durability.
You can choose from four colors: K Black S, K Brown S, K Green S, and K Kinglo S.
The cover work with K Green S turned out exceptionally well!
Our customer was very satisfied, and I was also very happy!
Thank you very much!
What is the Roof Overlay Method?
The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost intact and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
As the name suggests, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is installed in layers, it is also referred to as “layered roofing.”
Advantages of the Overlay Method
By placing a “new roof” over the “current roof,” demolition work is almost unnecessary, meaning that very little waste is generated.
This is its most significant feature, leading to various advantages.
The only part that requires demolition and waste disposal is the ridge cap, so compared to a complete roof replacement, the cost is lower.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for details, please visit the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Some building materials used in structures built before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to demolish due to their high environmental impact, resulting in high costs for both demolition and waste disposal. The roof overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
You may be wondering, “Is it safe to live in a building that uses asbestos-containing materials?” but rest assured. As long as there is no destruction or crushing, it will not disperse into the air.
If you are unsure about the type of roof on your home, please feel free to consult with us.
Additionally, we can complete the work in a shorter time frame compared to painting or a full roof replacement. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn makes the overall cost lower.
The psychological anxiety of having to live in an unusual environment is also reduced.
When scaffolding is erected, you may experience inconveniences such as difficulty entering and exiting or opening windows. Being able to return to your normal life in a short period is a significant advantage.
Our company specializes in roofing work, and the roof overlay method is the most frequently performed service we provide. We are very grateful that we consistently have ongoing projects for roof overlay work.
