At Mukogaoka High School in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo,
we collaborated with students to create a
human-powered merry-go-round for the school festival (cultural festival)!

This was our first collaboration with Mukogaoka High School,
and we successfully completed the project!
Thank you very much to everyone at Mukogaoka High School for entrusting us with this wonderful project to showcase at your festival!

Human-Powered Merry-Go-Round

During discussions about the school festival presentation, it seems that the students were inspired by last year’s video of our human-powered merry-go-round.

Since they wanted the same structure as last year’s merry-go-round,
we began working on the human-powered merry-go-round just like last year!

The production took 2 days, and we spent those 2 days working on-site!

Production Process of the Human-Powered Merry-Go-Round

Materials Used

・Steel pipes

・Rolling casters

・Pipe clamps

・Boards (for seats)

・Screws

・Wheels, etc.

Material Transportation

First, we greeted the students and started transporting the materials! Carrying long steel pipes up the stairs to the classroom was a bit challenging, but the boys actively helped carry them, making the transportation go smoothly!

Merry-Go-Round Base

Next, we start building the foundation! First, we lay boards all over to prevent damage to the floor! We attach casters to the foundation, fixing four on each side to allow for rotation!

We proceed with tasks like cutting pipes and using hammers to balance things out, working together with the students. Everyone was enjoying the new tools and tasks, and I was very happy to see the energetic boys participating actively!

Merry-Go-Round Body

Once the foundation was complete, we moved on to the main body! Since we were indoors, we adjusted the length to avoid hitting the ceiling, reinforced it, and installed the wheels. Thanks to everyone’s cooperation, we were able to complete the main body on the first day!
The students also took the initiative in tasks like cutting wood, clamping, and attaching pipes!

We decided to create the seating part on the second day, so it wasn’t finished on the first day, but
I was relieved that the merry-go-round rotated smoothly without any issues!

Merry-Go-Round Decoration (Seat)

On the second day, we created the seating part of the merry-go-round! Since this is where people will sit, we secure it firmly and reinforce it carefully to prevent it from breaking due to movement!

The decoration committee students requested to cover the chairs with fabric, and since we had just the right tools, we fulfilled their request and did the decoration as well!

Human-Powered Merry-Go-Round Completed

The group photo shows the chairs not yet installed…
Once the chairs were attached and secured, we finally had the Human-Powered Merry-Go-Round Completed!

It was able to operate smoothly even with two people on it! This time, it was quite high and thrilling, and the students who tried it out were really excited!

Now they can participate in the school festival with peace of mind! It seems like the event was a great success on the day as well, which is wonderful!!

Thank you very much for entrusting us with this project!
