The Role of the Roof

First, let me introduce the role of the roof itself!

The roof is something that is taken for granted. You probably don’t think about the role of the roof on a daily basis. But what would happen without a roof? Rain and snow would come into the room, making it difficult to live, right?

Here are the basic roles of the roof.

Protects from rain, wind, and natural disasters

The roof protects the people living in the house every day. According to data released by the Japan Meteorological Agency, it rains once a week on average. Japan also has a rainy season, which means the roof protects your home from rain quite frequently. It’s easy to understand if you think of the roof as serving the same role as an umbrella.The roof also protects against strong winds and natural disasters.

Additionally, Japan is a country where typhoons frequently occur, and it protects against strong winds and natural disasters.

A reliable roof does not protect us forever. It is something that will inevitably deteriorate.

Introduction to Roof Parts

We will introduce the names of roof parts that are useful to know for maintenance, using photos!

Names of Roof Parts

Roughly speaking, it looks like this! There are many names for different parts of the roof, which can be confusing.

There may be some unfamiliar terms, so we will explain the roles of each name!

Ridge Cap and Nukiita

First, the ridge cap is the metal covering at the very top of the roof. The nukiita is the underlying material located beneath the ridge cap!

The structure involves placing a base material called “nukiita” on top of the junction of the roof body, and then covering it with the ridge cap.

Since the peak of the roof is not covered by roofing materials, it is protected by the ridge cap, which covers the critical point of the roof!

Fascia

Next is the fascia. The fascia is located on the side of the building. As we will introduce later, the side without a rain gutter can be referred to as the fascia.

Roofs tend to be weak against winds blowing from below or the side, so we install fascia to compensate for that.

Additionally, it serves to prevent rain from entering. Without fascia, the sides would be exposed, allowing rain to enter and cause leaks… The role of the fascia is to cover that!

Fascia Metal

Next, let’s talk about the eaves flashing. Eaves flashing refers to the Galvalume metal sheet wrapped around the eaves. The major difference from regular eaves is the durability.

Regular eaves require maintenance through repainting, but with eaves flashing, repainting is unnecessary, which reduces maintenance costs. Since the durability is longer, it becomes more cost-effective in the long run.

Eaves

Next is the eaves. The eaves, like the eaves flashing, are located on the side without the rain gutter.

The eaves serve to regulate sunlight exposure. Without eaves, direct sunlight hits the exterior walls and windows, increasing the likelihood of high temperatures in the second-floor rooms. If direct sunlight continues to hit the exterior walls, the degradation speed of the walls increases due to UV exposure.

Additionally, they also play a role in preventing rainwater from blowing in.

Curly Grass (Eaves Edge)

Next is the curly grass. Some people often confuse curly grass with eaves, but as explained above, eaves are installed in areas where there are eaves flashing. Curly grass is installed at the lowest point of the roof (eaves edge).

Curly grass is also installed to prevent rainwater intrusion at the eaves, and this is referred to as 【Eaves Curly Grass】. The curly grass on the side with the rain gutter (as shown in the above photo) is also called 【Eaves Edge Curly Grass】.

Curly grass serves to direct rainwater flowing from the roof into the rain gutter. There is a phenomenon called capillary action on the roof, where rainwater can enter and backflow through tiny gaps in the roofing material. This phenomenon poses a risk of leaks and is very dangerous.

Curly grass is an essential roofing material to prevent such phenomena from occurring.

Rain Gutter

Next is the rain gutter. The rain gutter is a building material designed to prevent rainwater flowing from the curly grass from running down the exterior walls or eaves.

If there is no rain gutter, rainwater flowing from the roof will run down the exterior walls directly to the ground. This can cause the rainwater that falls to the ground to splash, not only dirtying the exterior walls and foundation but also significantly increasing the degradation speed.

Although rain gutters may seem plain at first glance, they are one of the key elements that protect your home! Additionally, just having rain gutters installed can help resolve rainwater noise issues.

If your rain gutter is chipped or cracked, consult a contractor immediately.

Rain Stopper Metal

Finally, we have the rain stopper metal. The rain stopper metal is a sheet metal installed at the junction between the roof and the exterior wall.

It serves to prevent rainwater from entering through the gap between the roof and the exterior wall and also creates an escape route for rainwater that has entered internally.

It’s not just a matter of filling all the gaps with caulking; if everything is sealed off, rainwater that has entered somewhere will lose its escape route and accumulate, leading to the risk of leaks.

With the rain stopper metal in place, rainwater is less likely to accumulate inside, reducing the chances of leaks.
