Roof Overlay (Cover Method) Construction Steps
1. Existing Ridge and Snow Stop Demolition
We will only dismantle the ridge flashing and snow stops that would obstruct the overlay work.
The hole in the photo is for the ventilation ridge.
2. Roofing Installation (Waterproof Sheet)
The roofing used this time is modified asphalt. It offers double the durability of standard asphalt roofing!
3. Custom Fabrication (Karakusa and Keraba)
We will process and install the keraba and karakusa.
4. Main Construction
We will install the main roofing material while securing the front screws.
5. Sealer and Nailing Board Installation
Once the main body is finished, we will install the sealant on the batten before setting it in place.
This time, we used a cedar batten, but there are also resin battens that are resistant to corrosion.
5. Ridge Cap Processing
We will process and install the ridge cap. We will firmly apply sealing on the inside of the joints.
At the wall edge, we will process and install a component called a rain stop flashing.
6. Cleaning
We will remove footprints and debris that have inevitably fallen around the house and in the rain gutters, and perform a thorough cleaning.
We strive to ensure that the area looks cleaner after the work than it did before!

The roofing material used is Eco Granie from Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd.
The manufacturer offers a long warranty of 30 years on the base material.
Eco Granie is a lightweight metal roof made from zinc-aluminum steel, which is of the same quality as galvalume steel, ensuring high durability.
The surface is coated with natural stone granules, which prevents significant fading and maintains aesthetic appeal over the long term.
Thanks to the stone granules on the surface, it can reduce summer heat and the sound of rain.
Additionally, it is lightweight, rust-resistant, and excels in durability and seismic resistance.

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay (cover method) involves leaving the current roof almost as it is and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is layered, it is also referred to as “重ね葺き” (kasane-buki).
Advantages of the Cover Method
Since the “new roof” is placed over the “current roof,” demolition work is almost unnecessary, meaning that very little waste material is generated.
This is its most significant feature, leading to various advantages.
The only parts that require demolition and waste disposal are the ridge cap, making it more cost-effective compared to complete roof replacement.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for details, please refer to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Some building materials used in structures built before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to dismantle due to their high environmental impact, resulting in high costs for both demolition and waste disposal. The cover method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
Some may wonder, “Is it safe to live in a building with asbestos-containing materials?” but rest assured. As long as there is no destruction or crushing, it will not disperse into the air.

Additionally, it can be completed in a shorter timeframe than painting or complete roof replacement. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn reduces expenses.
