What is the Exterior Wall Cover Method?
We will explain in detail the recommended points and precautions of the exterior wall cover method!
The exterior wall cover method is a construction process that overlays a new exterior wall on top of the existing wall.
It can be applied to various types of walls, including ALC walls, ceramic siding, and mortar walls.
The materials used for the exterior wall cover method are generally lightweight and durable metal siding.
While the costs are higher compared to exterior painting, it is a method of exterior wall renovation that has various benefits and is gaining attention year by year.
Why is the Exterior Wall Cover Method Popular?
Here are the “5 Points” that make Kakeru Koumuten’s exterior wall cover method highly regarded!
Point 1 Super High Durability!!
Metal siding offers an overwhelmingly high expected durability compared to exterior painting.
Made of Galvalume steel, SGL steel, and aluminum, there are various types of metal siding, but with aluminum, you can expect a durability of over 40 years!
Additionally, unlike ceramic siding or mortar exteriors, it does not crack or break, making its sturdiness one of its advantages!
If you use high-durability sealing materials, maintenance will be unnecessary for nearly 30 years!
Point 2 Improved Insulation!!
Cross-section of metal siding
The metal siding used in the exterior cover method comes with integrated insulation material.
Moreover, by installing furring strips before the metal siding installation to create a ventilation layer, the insulation properties are significantly improved!
This enhancement in insulation is one of the major benefits of metal siding.
Point 3 Comprehensive Warranty for Peace of Mind!!
While exterior painting often comes with company-specific warranties, manufacturer warranties are generally not included.
Metal siding, however, comes with solid manufacturer warranties such as coating and perforation guarantees, providing a high level of reassurance for long-term exterior renovations!
Point 4 Improved Waterproofing!!
With the exterior material being double-layered, it effectively prevents rainwater intrusion, significantly enhancing waterproofing.
Applying waterproof paper before installation further increases waterproofing effectiveness!
Point 5 Enhanced Aesthetic Appeal!!
Various designs such as wood grain and tile patterns
Metal siding allows for a finish that resembles a new construction, which cannot be achieved with exterior painting.
There are various designs available, ranging from simple styles to tile-like and wood grain patterns.
You can choose from a variety of designs that match the atmosphere of your building and your personal preferences!
Major manufacturers include Aiji Industrial, Keimyuu, Nichiwa, and Asahi Tostem, each offering a range of types and designs of metal siding.
If you find a product of interest in the catalog, you can also request cut samples!
What should you be aware of when doing exterior wall cover work with metal siding?
Next, we will explain the “three points of caution” when using metal siding for exterior wall cover methods!
Caution 1 Few contractors can perform the work
There are significantly fewer contractors capable of performing metal siding cover methods compared to exterior painting contractors.
Many inexperienced contractors exist, leading to a higher occurrence of troubles.
Since there is often a wide variation in estimate costs, to ensure a satisfactory construction,
if you are considering the exterior wall cover method with metal siding, make sure to obtain estimates from three or more companies and carefully review the details!
Caution 2 Prone to dents and scratches
Metal siding can develop dents from impacts when objects hit it.
Additionally, being prone to scratches is one of its disadvantages.
If noticeable scratches occur and are a concern, you can request repairs from a specialized repair contractor!
Caution 3 Long construction period
Exterior wall cover work can be considered one of the most extensive renovations in exterior remodeling.
While exterior painting usually takes about 2 to 3 weeks, exterior wall cover work can often take close to a month.
The long construction period can be a source of stress for residents, making it one of the disadvantages.

How to Choose a Siding Contractor in Aoba-ku, Yokohama
There are fewer contractors that handle exterior wall cover work compared to exterior painting contractors, so it may be difficult to find a reputable contractor, wondering “where should I request this?”
The most important thing when choosing a contractor or obtaining an estimate is to always obtain multiple estimates!
For this reason, when requesting exterior wall cover work, let’s confirm the following four points.
1. Check the contents and materials of the estimate
2. Confirm the existence of warranties and aftercare services
3. Obtain estimates from multiple contractors (at least three companies)
4. Confirm whether the contractor performs the exterior wall cover work in-house
By confirming the above four points, you will be able to choose a reliable contractor.
1. Check the contents and materials of the estimate
When obtaining an estimate for exterior wall cover work, let’s check the following items!
・Is the proposed new siding material suitable for your requirements?
Check whether materials that meet your requirements, such as durability and insulation, are being proposed!
Since there are various types of metal siding, such as cost-effective siding and insulation-focused siding, ensure that the proposed siding aligns with your original requirements!
・Is the proposed construction method appropriate?
When performing exterior wall cover work, it is necessary to establish a ventilation layer between the existing exterior wall and the new exterior wall material using a method called “ventilation method.”
If you proceed without establishing a ventilation layer and directly attach the material, moisture cannot escape, leading to mold, corrosion, or potential peeling and lifting of the exterior wall material.
Check whether the proposed construction is appropriate!
・Are the quantities and construction details described in detail?
If the estimate states something vague like “exterior wall cover work 1 set,” it becomes difficult to understand the construction method and what the costs are for, making it hard to compare estimates.
Having clear unit prices and quantities for items like foundation water drainage and edge lengths will provide peace of mind and help prevent issues.
If there are items of concern not included in the estimate, confirm the reasons for their exclusion!
・Check the auxiliary materials to be used!
Let’s check not only the main siding but also the types of detailed auxiliary materials such as “types of battens“, “siding fasteners“, and “types of waterproof paper“!
For example, the siding fasteners are screws, and the overall cost will vary between iron and stainless steel.
While the cost of iron screws is lower, stainless steel screws are resistant to rust and are recommended.
2. Confirm the presence of warranties and aftercare services
When choosing a contractor for exterior wall covering work, make sure to check for warranties.
Exterior wall covering work is a significant investment in exterior remodeling, so in addition to the manufacturer’s warranty, check if there is a company warranty as well!
If the contractor offers a warranty period, they may provide free repairs within that period.
The warranty period varies by contractor and the nature of the work, but a 5 to 10-year setting is common.
Additionally, some contractors offer aftercare services separate from warranties, so be sure to check if the contractor you are considering has aftercare services.
Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd. provides a warranty for all exterior wall covering work.
We also conduct aftercare maintenance and send out annual DM, so if desired, annual inspections are possible.
3. Obtain estimates from multiple contractors (at least three)
When requesting exterior wall covering work, be sure to obtain estimates from multiple contractors.
The cost of the same repair can vary between contractors, and warranties and aftercare services may differ as well.
Additionally, obtaining multiple estimates makes it easier to negotiate prices.
To request your desired repair contractor at the best possible price, obtaining estimates from multiple contractors is essential.
When comparing estimates, consider not only the costs but also the plan details, materials, and auxiliary materials!
4. Confirm whether the contractor performs exterior wall covering work in-house
There is a difference in costs between companies that handle their own construction and those that outsource to external companies, which can also lead to troubles such as miscommunication with external contractors.
Additionally, if issues arise after construction, responses may be delayed, or there may be no dealings with external construction companies, making it more likely for problems to escalate.
One of the reasons we recommend companies that handle their own construction is that they can respond quickly when something goes wrong!
