Edge Cutting and Tas Spacer Installation Procedure
1. Edge Cutting with a Cutter or Skinning Knife
The overlapping parts of the existing roofing materials (such as colonial, slate, or color best) are stuck together because moisture and rainwater are trapped by paint filling the gaps.
Using a skinning knife or cutter, we separate the overlapping parts of the roofing materials.
If there is water accumulated, it will come out at this stage.
2. Tas Spacer Installation
Tas spacers are components that should be installed before painting the roof.
To avoid the need for edge cutting, we insert tas spacers into the gaps between the roofing materials after the primer coat to ensure a pathway for rainwater and moisture to escape.
This time, at the customer’s request, we installed tas spacers after edge cutting. We insert one or two spacers for each roofing material.
3. Clean up and finish!
That concludes the process.
This time, we performed edge cutting and tas spacer installation on a roof that was painted by another contractor!
I was relieved that the edge cutting went smoothly, more quickly than I expected.
There were times when the paint was thickly applied, making edge cutting challenging, so I was quite anxious until the day of the work. (laughs)
It is indeed recommended to install tas spacers rather than performing edge cutting.
By installing tas spacers, there is no need to walk on the beautiful roof after completion, and above all, it is more reliable and easier than edge cutting!!
・Prevents water leakage!
When painting colonial, slate, or color best roofs, it is necessary to install cut edges or taspacers unless there is a gap of 4mm or more between the roofing materials. Conversely, if there is a gap of 4mm or more, the drainage for rainwater is secured, so taspacers are not needed.
It is necessary to check after painting to ensure that the gap is maintained.
If you fill the gap without cutting edges or installing taspacers, rainwater or moisture that has entered will block the original drainage path with paint, leading to water leakage.
Additionally, it can lead to corrosion of the substrate (roof sheathing).
Water-based paints tend to create thick coatings, making it easier to block gaps.
I have personally dealt with cases where other contractors neglected cutting edges, resulting in water leakage.
It’s scary that work intended to beautify can actually shorten the lifespan of the roof…
I recommend hiring contractors who have proper knowledge of roofing when painting roofs!!
・What is a Taspacer???
A taspacer is an edge-cutting component specifically for slate produced by a company called K.K. Seimu.
By installing it, cutting edges become unnecessary.
It also improves rainwater drainage and ventilation.
I wonder if the name comes from “space” to “taspacer”? Just a thought (laughs) but it doesn’t really matter! Haha
