Hello!
I am Yamanaka from Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd., a specialist in roofing, exterior painting, and exterior renovations located in Aoba-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture!
This is a record of our work on roof repairs, including the replacement of ridge caps and air conditioning hose bellows in Tama Ward, Kawasaki City!
Thank you very much for choosing Kakeru Koumuten Co., Ltd. from among many contractors!
The ridge cap is the metal covering that protects areas of the roof where roofing materials cannot be laid, such as the peak of the roof.
It is susceptible to damage from wind disasters and can also be a cause of leaks.
Lifespan of Ridge Caps
The lifespan of ridge caps varies depending on the material, but it is generally said to be 15 to 25 years.
Nowadays, ridge caps made of galvalume steel are mainstream, so while deformation of the ridge caps may occur, their durability is around 30 to 35 years!
However, issues such as nails pulling out or the ridge cap lifting can occur before that, so it is common to perform maintenance every 5 to 10 years.
If you wait too long thinking everything is fine, you might end up with excessive costs due to leaks penetrating into the roof’s interior.
Please consult us before that happens!
Tama Ward Roof Repair (Ridge Cap Replacement) Procedure
1. Existing Ridge Demolition
We will remove the old ridge cap and the internal wooden batten. Care must be taken not to break the roofing materials during this process.
It is recommended to replace the internal wooden batten every 10 to 15 years.
Once the ridge cap is removed, you will find the batten inside.
2. Installation of New Batten
We will install a new batten. There are batten options that are resistant to corrosion, such as resin battens (Toughmock, Eco Lumber), and this time we used Toughmock!
3. Sealing Ridge Cap Joints
We will apply sealing to the inside of the overlaps to enhance strength and waterproofing.
4. Installation of New Ridge Cap and Ventilation Ridge
We will process and install the ends and joints.
5. Replacement of Air Conditioning Duct Bellows
We disposed of part of the existing duct and replaced it with a new one!‼︎
6. Cleaning
That’s all!
This roof repair and leak prevention work involved ridge cap installation!
What is Ridge Cap?
The “ridge” in ridge cap refers to the roofing material installed at the highest point of a detached house. It consists of a base material called “nukiita” placed over the joints of the roof, with a metal sheet covering it.
Since the peak of the roof is not covered by roofing material, the ridge cap protects the critical areas of the roof!
The ridge cap is fixed with nails or screws from the side, and often, the lifting of these can lead to deterioration.
When metal materials are used for the ridge, it is called “ridge cap,” and when tiles are used, it is referred to as “ridge tile”
.
Ridge Cap Repair Methods
The general flow of ridge cap repair methods is as follows.
Removal
Remove the existing ridge cap. This is a dangerous task at height, so care must be taken while working.
Installation of Base Material (Nukiita)
If the base material is also damaged, it needs to be newly installed. (Nukiita Replacement)
Especially if the nails of the ridge cap are lifting, it is highly likely that the base material has decayed due to leaks or deterioration.
If the deteriorated base material remains, even if a new ridge cap is installed, there is a risk that the nails will lift again or leaks will occur. Therefore, regular maintenance of the base material is necessary.
Replacement
Once the base material is prepared, install the new ridge cap. Drive nails into the ridge cap to secure it to the nukiita, and fill the joints with sealing material. The sealing material is applied on the inside of the joints, so it is not visible from the outside!
The sealing material is a flexible paste-like substance, mostly made from modified silicone!
It has waterproof and airtight properties, joining the seams of building materials like ridge caps, enhancing waterproof functionality and preventing scattering due to strong winds.
