Yokosuka City Roof Overlay Construction Procedure
1. Demolition of Existing Ridge and Snow Guards
We will only dismantle the ridge metal and snow guards that would obstruct the overlay work.
2. Roofing Installation (Waterproof Sheet)
The roofing used this time is modified asphalt. It is expected to have double the durability of regular asphalt roofing!
3. Fabrication of Accessories (Karakusa and Keraba)
We will process and install the keraba and karakusa.
4. Main Construction
After installing the main body, we will install the purlin at the ridge and wall edges. This time, we used cedar purlins, but there are also purlins made of resin that are resistant to corrosion.
5. Ridge Cap Processing
We will process and install the ridge cap and ventilation ridge. We will apply sealing thoroughly on the inside of the joints.
For the wall edges, we will process and install a component called rain guard metal.
6. Cleaning
We will remove footprints and any debris that has fallen around the house and inside the rain gutters, and we will clean by wiping down the surfaces.
We strive to ensure that the area looks cleaner after the work than it did before!

The roofing material used is the Super Galtect from Aijii Industrial.
The Super Galtect comes with a manufacturer warranty of 15 years for the coating and 25 years for perforation.

Additionally, it has soundproofing properties, reducing the sound of rain.
Moreover, it is lightweight compared to other roofing materials, which reduces the sway during earthquakes, making it a good earthquake countermeasure.

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost as it is and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is laid on top, it is also referred to as “overlapping roofing.”
Advantages of the Overlay Method
Since a “new roof” is placed over the “current roof,” demolition work is almost unnecessary, meaning that very little waste material is produced.
This is the biggest feature, leading to various advantages.
The only part that requires dismantling and waste disposal is the ridge cap, so compared to a complete roof replacement, the cost is lower.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for details, please refer to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Some building materials used in structures built before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to dismantle due to their high environmental impact, resulting in high costs for both dismantling and waste disposal. The roof overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
