Due to dirt and deterioration from long-term use, we conducted a toilet replacement project.
We carried out the replacement work due to water leaks caused by deterioration in the water supply connection and issues with the warm water washing toilet seat. Along with the toilet replacement, we also replaced the wallpaper and flooring.
When to Replace Your Toilet
The timing for replacing a toilet can vary depending on usage and maintenance, but a general guideline is around 10 to 20 years.
While the toilet bowl itself may last a long time, components inside the tank, water supply pipes, shut-off valves, and warm water washing toilet seats may deteriorate faster than the toilet bowl.
If you notice any of the following symptoms, please consider repair or replacement.
- Water is leaking from the toilet
- The toilet won’t stop running
- The warm water washing toilet seat is not functioning
- Flushing is poor or prone to clogs
- Strange noises or odors are present
- There are cracks or damage to the toilet bowl

What is a Toilet?
A toilet is a residential fixture composed of a bowl, tank, seat, water supply pipe, and drainage pipe. Common types of toilets include those that combine a bowl, tank, and seat, those where the bowl and seat are integrated, and tankless types that do not have a tank.
Recent toilets often come equipped with features that prioritize cleanliness and ease of use, such as the following.
- Water-saving features that reduce water bills
- Automatic cleaning that flushes after use
- Automatic opening and closing of the lid
- Deodorizing function that suppresses odors
- Warm water washing toilet seat and heated toilet seat
- Stain-resistant coating that makes it hard for dirt to stick
Points to Note for Toilet Replacement Work
Toilets can have “floor drainage” that drains to the floor or “wall drainage” that drains to the wall. For floor drainage, check the “drainage center” from the wall to the center of the drainage pipe, and for wall drainage, confirm the height from the floor. Products that do not match cannot be installed as is.
Check not only the width but also the height, depth, and space in front of the toilet. A ground outlet is required for warm water washing toilets, and some tankless models may not be installable depending on the water pressure.
If the new toilet is smaller, dirt, discoloration, and screw holes that were previously hidden may become visible. If you are replacing the interior, doing the work while the toilet is removed will allow for a clean finish under and behind the toilet.

If you do interior work after replacing the toilet, there may be additional costs for removing and reinstalling the new toilet. If you are concerned about the deterioration of wallpaper or cushion flooring, replacing them simultaneously can keep costs down while beautifying the entire toilet space.
Relocation or expansion of the installation location, in the case of apartments
If you are moving the toilet position or adding a new one, it will be necessary to install or relocate the water supply pipe, drainage pipe, outlet, and ventilation equipment. In apartments, construction content may be specified by management regulations, so it is also necessary to confirm with the management company or management association in advance.

Toilet Replacement Work Procedure
Before construction, signs of aging such as dirt, deterioration of internal tank parts, and issues with the warm water washing toilet seat can be observed.
Since there may be water remaining in the toilet bowl, we carefully remove it to avoid making a mess. After removal, we clean the floor and remove any old fixtures to prepare for the installation of the new toilet.
After removing the existing toilet, we check the condition of the drainage pipe, water supply pipe, and stop valve. If there is any deterioration or damage to the parts, we replace them with new ones. If the drainage position of the new toilet differs from the existing one, we use a drainage adjuster for renovations to make the necessary adjustments.
If there is corrosion or damage to the floor, we will repair it before installing the toilet.
We align the new toilet with the installation position and securely connect it to the drainage socket. We check that the toilet is not misaligned or tilted, and use dedicated fixtures and screws to secure it to the floor. Careful installation is necessary to avoid gaps or misalignment at the drainage connection, as this can lead to leaks or unpleasant odors.
For combination types, attach the tank to the toilet and connect it to the water supply pipe. Then, connect the warm water washing toilet seat, water supply hose, power source, and ground wire, and if there is a wall-mounted remote control, check its convenient position and install it.
For tankless or integrated toilets, connect the main unit, water supply part, power source, etc., according to the product installation manual.
Open the stop valve to allow water flow and check for leaks from the water supply pipe, stop valve, tank, toilet, and drainage connection parts. Also, confirm that the warm water washing toilet seat operates without issues, then clean up to complete the job.
