Roof Overlay (Cover Method) Construction Procedure
1. Existing Ridge and Snow Stops Demolition
We will dismantle only the ridge flashing and snow stops that obstruct the overlay work.
2. Installing Sheathing
We will process and attach the sheathing boards.
3. Roofing Installation (Waterproof Sheet)
The roofing used this time is modified asphalt. It offers double the durability of standard asphalt roofing!
4. Component Processing (Karakusa and Keraba)
We will process and install the keraba and karakusa.
5. Main Construction
Once the main body is roofed, we will install the ridge and wall plates. This time, we used cedar ridge boards, but there are also resin ridge boards that are resistant to corrosion.
6. Ridge Metal Processing
We will process and install the ridge metal. We will firmly apply sealing on the inside of the joints.
For the wall edge, we will process and install a component called rain stop metal.
7. Cleaning
We will remove footprints and any debris that has fallen around the house and in the rain gutters, followed by a thorough cleaning.
We strive to leave the site cleaner after the work than it was before!

About the Roofing Material
The roofing material used this time is Nichiha Corporation’s Yokodori Roof αS.
Yokodori Roof αS comes with a manufacturer warranty of 15 years for the coating, 20 years for red rust, and 25 years for perforation.
It is a high-performance metal insulated roof made from a combination of metal steel plate (high-durability painted Galvalume steel plate), insulation (rigid polyurethane foam), and aluminum laminate backing material, all molded together.
It is lightweight, earthquake-resistant, and exhibits excellent insulation performance throughout the year, achieving long maintenance due to its high durability.
You can choose from four colors: K Black S, K Brown S, K Green S, and K Kinglo S.
The cover work with K Brown S turned out exceptionally well!

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost as it is and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is laid over the existing one, it is also referred to as “overlapping roofing.”
Advantages of the Overlay Method
Since a “new roof” is placed over the “current roof,” almost no demolition work is required, meaning very little waste is generated.
This is its most significant feature, leading to various advantages.
The only parts that require demolition and waste disposal are the ridge flashing, making it more cost-effective compared to complete roof replacements.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for details, please refer to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Some building materials used in structures built before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to demolish due to their high environmental impact, and the costs for demolition and waste disposal are also high. The overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
Some may wonder, “Is it safe to live in a building with asbestos-containing materials?” but rest assured. Unless they are destroyed or crushed, they will not disperse into the air.

Additionally, the construction can be completed in a shorter time frame compared to painting or complete roof replacements. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn makes the overall cost lower.
