The work involved a roof overlay (cover method)!

Roof Overlay Construction Procedure
1. Existing Ridge and Snow Stops Demolition
We will dismantle only the ridge flashing and snow stops that obstruct the overlay work.
2. Roofing Installation (Waterproof Sheet)
The roofing material used this time is modified asphalt. It is expected to have double the durability of asphalt roofing!
3. Fabrication of Accessories (Karakusa and Keraba)
We will process and install the keraba and karakusa.
4. Skylight Metal Fabrication
5. Main Construction
Yoko-dan Roof S will be installed, and then we will place a purlin at the ridge and wall edges. This time, we used a cedar purlin, but there are also purlins made of corrosion-resistant resin.
6. Ridge Metal Fabrication
We will process and install the ridge metal. We will firmly apply sealing on the inside of the joints.
For the wall edges, we will process and install a component called rain stop metal.
7. Cleaning
We will remove footprints and debris that have fallen around the house and inside the rain gutters, and do a thorough cleaning.
We strive to make the area cleaner after construction than it was before!

Roofing Material Used
The roofing material used this time is Yoko-dan Roof S from Nichiha Corporation.
Yoko-dan Roof S comes with a 15-year coating, 20-year red rust, and 25-year perforation manufacturer warranty.
It is a high-performance metal insulated roof made of metal steel plate (high-durability painted galvalume steel plate), insulation (rigid urethane foam), and aluminum laminate backing material, all molded together.
It is lightweight, earthquake-resistant, and exhibits excellent insulation performance throughout the year, achieving long maintenance due to its high durability.
Color
This time, we completed a roof overlay (cover method) with Black S, and it turned out exceptionally well!

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay (cover method) involves leaving the existing roof almost intact and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is laid over the existing one, it is also referred to as “overlapping roofing.”
Advantages of the Overlay Method
Since a “new roof” is placed over the “existing roof,” demolition work is almost unnecessary, meaning that very little waste is generated.
This is the biggest feature and leads to various advantages.
The only parts that require demolition and waste disposal are the ridge cap, making it more cost-effective compared to complete roof replacement.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for more details, please visit the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Some building materials used in structures built before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to demolish due to their high environmental impact, and the costs for demolition and waste disposal are also high. The overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
Some may wonder, “Is it safe to live in a building that uses asbestos-containing materials?” but rest assured. As long as there is no destruction or crushing, it will not disperse into the air.

Additionally, the construction can be completed in a shorter time frame compared to painting or complete replacement. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn makes the overall cost more affordable.
This also reduces the psychological anxiety of having to live in an unusual environment.
When scaffolding is set up, there may be inconveniences such as difficulty entering and exiting or opening windows. Being able to return to normal life in a short period is a significant advantage.
