This is a case study of an exterior renovation project in Oiso Town, Nakagun, Kanagawa Prefecture.
There are several types of exterior renovations, and the work we are doing this time is a roof overlay (cover method) project (Diplomat Star)!
Along with the roof overlay work, we also removed and reattached the water heater!

Roof Overlay Construction Procedure
1. Dismantling Existing Roof Ridge Flashing
2. Installing Roofing (Waterproof Sheet)
The roofing material used is Jouyu Pulp Industry/Sunlight G!
It is made of modified asphalt roofing, which is said to have double the durability of regular asphalt roofing.
As long as the roofing is solid, it will prevent leaks as a primary waterproofing measure!
We will ensure it is firmly attached to prevent it from blowing away. [/chat]
3. Fabrication of Accessories (Karakusa & Keraba)
The materials used for the accessories will be galvalume steel.
4. Main Construction (Deez Roofing/Diplomat Star)
Once the roofing is completed up to the ridge, we will install the necessary materials to secure the ridge board, known as the kanban. There are types of kanban made of cedar and resin, and this time we used the resin type!
The resin type is expected to have 2 to 3times the durability compared to the cedar type!
5. Ridge Cap & Sealing at Various Locations
At the wall edges, we will process and install a component called rain guard sheet metal.
We will use stainless steel nails and screws that are resistant to rust for securing!
6. Cleaning
About Roofing Materials
The roofing material used is the Diplomat Star from Deez Roofing.
Deez Roofing comes with a 30-year warranty on the base material.
Our company also provides a 10-year construction warranty!
The base material is made of zinc-aluminum steel, which has the same composition as galvanized steel that is resistant to rust.
Deez Roofing reduces heat conduction to the steel layer due to the effect of the surface stone granules. It is designed to be less conductive of heat to the attic compared to other roofing materials, as it secures a sufficient air layer between the roofing material and the roof substrate.
Additionally, the unevenness of the surface stone granules helps to disperse raindrops, resulting in smaller impacts compared to a normal smooth surface. This also allows the surface natural stone granule layer to suppress the high-frequency noise caused by the micro-vibrations of the steel plate when raindrops hit, which is a source of the “noisy sound” from steel roofs.
By adopting the “interlocking method” that integrates the roofing materials, it has excellent performance that can withstand winds of 60m/s, as well as outstanding fire and water resistance.

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay (cover method) involves leaving the current roof almost intact and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is layered, it is also referred to as “overlapping roofing.”
Advantages of the Cover Method
By placing a “new roof” over the “current roof,” demolition work is almost unnecessary, meaning that very little waste is generated.
This is its most significant feature, leading to various advantages.
The only parts that require demolition and waste disposal are the ridge cap, making it more cost-effective compared to complete roof replacement.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for more details, please visit the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Some building materials used in structures built before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to demolish due to their high environmental impact, resulting in high costs for both demolition and waste disposal. The cover method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
Some may wonder, “Is it safe to live in a building that uses asbestos-containing materials?” but rest assured. As long as there is no destruction or crushing, it will not disperse into the air.

Additionally, the construction can be completed in a shorter timeframe compared to painting or complete roof replacement. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn makes the overall cost more affordable.
