This is a case study of roof renovation and rain gutter work in Musashino City, Tokyo.
There are various types of roof renovations, and the work we performed this time is a roof overlay (cover method) for a slate roof (Ridgeway)!

Roof Overlay Construction Procedure
1. Existing Ridge and Snow Stops Demolition
We will only dismantle the ridge metal and snow stops that will obstruct the overlay work.
2. Roofing Installation (Waterproof Sheet)
The roofing material used this time is modified asphalt. It is expected to have double the durability of asphalt roofing!
3. Fabrication of Components (Karakusa, Keraba, Valley)
We will process and install the keraba, karakusa, and valley metal sheets.
4. Skylight Metal Fabrication
Once the main body is roofed up to the skylight, we will proceed with the metal fabrication for the skylight.
We will process the metal sheets to ensure that rainwater is properly drained off the main body.
5. Main Body Construction
After roofing the main body, we will install the purlins at the ridge and wall edges. This time, we used cedar purlins, but there are also purlins made of corrosion-resistant resin.
6. Ridge Metal Fabrication
We will process and install the ridge metal. We will apply sealing thoroughly on the inside of the joints.
For the wall edges, we will use a component called rain stop metal.
7. Cleaning
We will remove any debris that has fallen around the ridge metal, the house, and inside the rain gutters, and perform a thorough cleaning.
We strive to leave the site cleaner after the work than it was before!
Rain Gutter Replacement Construction Procedure
1. Dismantling Existing Eaves Gutter
We will remove the eaves gutter and brackets carefully to avoid damaging the fascia.
2. Installation of new eaves brackets
We will install new eaves brackets. When installing the brackets, we will use kite string or chalk lines to ensure the correct slope for the rain gutter. The slope of the rain gutter is very important!
It is important to note that due to the fascia (where the eaves brackets were attached) and any distortions in the building, even if we set the slope with the brackets, there may be backflow. It is crucial to check the slope with a level against the fascia before attaching the brackets!
3. Installation of eaves gutter
We will install the new eaves gutter!
4. Connection to vertical gutter
We will connect the vertical gutter to the eaves gutter.
5. Water flow test, cleaning, and completion!
That’s all!
For the eaves gutter, we used Panasonic PC50.
Unlike Denka or Eslon rain gutters, it has a steel plate inside, providing greater strength.

The roofing material used is Ridgeway from Asahi Fiberglass.
Ridgeway comes with a 10-year manufacturer warranty.
Since it uses natural stone that is baked on the surface, it is a roofing material that does not require painting, thus reducing maintenance costs!
Additionally, because it uses fine natural stones on the surface, you won’t be troubled by the sound of rain.
Moreover, it is a lightweight roofing material, making it strong against earthquakes and providing seismic resistance.

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost as it is and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is laid on top of the existing one, it is also referred to as “overlapping roofing.”
Advantages of the Overlay Method
Since a “new roof” is placed over the “current roof,” demolition work is almost unnecessary, meaning that very little waste is generated.
This is its most significant feature, leading to various advantages.
The only part that requires demolition and waste disposal is the ridge cap, so compared to complete roof replacement, the cost is lower.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for more details, please visit the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Some building materials used in structures built before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are challenging to dismantle due to their high environmental impact, and both demolition and waste disposal costs can be high. The overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
Some may wonder, “Is it safe to live in a building that uses asbestos-containing materials?” but rest assured. As long as there is no destruction or crushing, it will not disperse into the air.

Additionally, it can be completed in a shorter time frame than painting or complete replacement. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn makes the overall cost lower.
