This is a case study of a roofing renovation project in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture.
There are several types of roofing renovations, and this project involved a roof overlay (cover method)!

Roof Overlay (Cover Method) Construction Procedure
1. Existing Ridge Demolition

The roofing used is Nisshin Kogyo / Kappa 23!
This material is modified asphalt roofing, which is said to have double the durability of regular asphalt roofing.
As a primary waterproofing measure, if the roofing is properly installed, there will be no leaks!
We will securely adhere it to prevent it from blowing away. [/chat]
3. Custom processing (decorative eaves and gable)
Before the main roof construction, we will process and install decorative eaves, gables, and valley flashing!
The materials used for the custom work will be the same SGL steel plate as the horizontal panel roof itself.
4. Main construction
After the custom processing, we will install the horizontal panel roof up to the ridge!
Once the roof is installed up to the ridge, we will set up the necessary materials to secure the ridge flashing, known as the batten. There are types of battens made of cedar and resin, and this time we used a resin type!
The resin type is expected to have three times the durability compared to the cedar type!
5. Ridge flashing and wall rain guard processing
We will process and install the ridge metal and ventilation ridge. We will firmly apply sealing on the inside of the joints.
The nails and screws used for fixing are made of stainless steel, which is resistant to rust![/chat]
6. Cleaning
Roof Materials Used
The roof material used this time is Nichiha Corporation’s Yokodan Roof S.
Yokodan Roof S comes with a 15-year paint film warranty, 20-year rust warranty, and 25-year hole warranty.
It is a high-performance metal insulated roof made by integrally molding metal steel plates (high-durability painted Galvalume steel plates), insulation material (rigid polyurethane foam), and aluminum laminate backing material.
It is lightweight, earthquake-resistant, exhibits excellent insulation performance throughout the year, and achieves long maintenance due to its high durability.

This time, the cover work with GINGRO S turned out very well!

What is the Roof Overlay (Cover Method)?
The roof overlay method involves leaving the current roof almost as it is and placing a new roof on top of it, effectively covering it.
Literally, it is a method of covering a roof with another roof. Therefore, the roof becomes double-layered. Since the roof is laid over, it is also referred to as “overlapping roofing.”
Advantages of the Overlay Method
Since a “new roof” is placed over the “current roof,” demolition work is almost unnecessary, meaning that very little waste material is generated.
This is the biggest feature and leads to various advantages.
The only part that requires demolition and waste disposal is the ridge cap, so compared to a full roof replacement, the cost is lower.
In 2004, regulations regarding the concentration of asbestos in raw materials were changed (for more details, please visit the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s website).
Some building materials used in structures built before 2004 contain asbestos. Asbestos-containing materials are difficult to demolish due to their high environmental impact, resulting in high costs for both demolition and waste disposal. The roof overlay method, which generates almost no waste, is ideal for such roofs.
Some may wonder, “Is it safe to live in a building that uses asbestos-containing materials?” but rest assured. As long as they are not destroyed or crushed, they will not disperse into the air.

Additionally, the construction can be completed in a shorter time frame compared to painting or full roof replacement. A shorter construction period means lower labor costs, which in turn reduces the overall cost.
